Awesome, Prof! Reishi is incredibly beautiful. Any info on substrate, timing, etc?
Reishi is on my list of future grows, so I'll be keeping an eye on your thread. Thanks!

Nicely done... good thing you left it in the bag so it didn't dry out too much.

Words can't say how nice your reishi look man! Congratulations on growing some fine quality mushrooms. Care to reveal the substrate they were grown on?

Thanks for the compliments.

I inoculated quart jars of rye grain with agar wedges and that took about 10 days to colonize 100%.
Then I spawned the jars of grain to a bags of supplemented sawdust which took about 2 weeks to colonize and consolidate.
From there I birthed them, dunking it for 24 hours before placing in fruiting conditions.

As it formed/matured it's blobs/pins I gradually receded the bag to where it is in the pictures.

How will you be preparing the Reishi?
I always dry the fruits in a dehydrator.
Then I weight out 5 grams for every 3 cups of beef/chicken/veg stock I use to steep it in.
I then simmer it on a very low simmer with the pot covered with a bag of baby carrots for 2 hours.
Once it is done steeping, I then top it off with tap water to replace anything that evaporated and bring it back up to 3 cups.
Then I take the broth carrots, mushrooms and all and put it into a pyrex baking pan with 1.5 cups of brown rice.
This will give you a 2:1 broth rice ratio which you will need to cook the rice in the oven.
Finally, I cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake it in the oven at 400 degrees for 40 minutes or until the rice has absorbed all the broth.
Stir, remove the reishi from the rice and serve in any fashion.
I usually make chicken and broccoli stir fry and top the rice with it or something of that fashion.

I like the sound of that recipe! It may be just the thing that gets me to pick up where I left off with reishi... last time I tried, I forgot about the blocks and by the time I remembered they needed fruiting, they were all dried out and green.

Nice looking reishis so far man. You just have the bags in a standard SGFC or what? Also, how did you dunk them for 24 hours in the bag without cutting holes in the bottom or something for the water to drain out? Do you have any special type of lighting setup for them or are they just getting what they get through the windows?
I'm highly curious about the best fruiting process for reishi. I am currently partaking in my first grow of any kind (second technically, though the other was a joint project at a friends house a while ago and it wasn't done properly). All is well so far, 6 jars inoculated from my first petri dishes, jars just about completely colonized. Now's the time for me to really be sure of how I'm going to approach fruiting and start on my SGFC is that is the recommended technique. Thank ya for any info!

Great grow! Why is it necessary to dry before boiling? How does the rice taste?

Reishi is an excellent choice for a beginner. It has very resilient mycelium and is virtually contam resistant for all intents and purposes.
I have seen a reishi block that was contaminated with both trichoderma and bacteria do a complete 180 in a 24 hours time period when removed from its spawn bag and placed out side.
The myc is literally fierce. It doesn't take bullying from anybody.
You just have the bags in a standard SGFC or what? Yea, these blocks are fruiting in a shotgun.
Also, how did you dunk them for 24 hours in the bag without cutting holes in the bottom or something for the water to drain out? I did cut a hole. In fact I cut the top completely off and place it in a 5 gallon bucket with an olympic weight placed on top to hold it down. Then I filled it with cold water in my bathtub and let it sit on the bathroom floor overnight.
Do you have any special type of lighting setup for them or are they just getting what they get through the windows? Tube floro's 6500k literally pressed up against the chamber on the side until the pinset comes in fully. Then I just take the lights off and let ambient lighting ride out the rest of the growth cycle.
This is only because I needed the lights for another project otherwise I would have left them on all the way.
It doesnt really make a difference though once the pinset is fully developed.
At that point it is more about moisture evaporation and fresh are exchange.
They love FAE!

Thanks man, helpful info for sure. I'm going to have a bunch of bags so I don't know if SGFC is my best bet. Not sure it makes a lot of sense for me to make like 6 SGFC... Still not sure exactly how I'm going to approach fruiting a whole bunch of bags, the space factor is catching up with my over-ambition.
I know what you mean about the myc being fierce though!
I've got a bunch of jars looking straight up ferocious. I hope that mycelium can chill for a couple days until I get my bags without bursting free from the jar...
Edit: Maybe I should refrigerate them to chill them out until I get a chance to spawn? It's only going to be like 2 days I think, maybe I should just let them be? I just don't want them to start pinning in there before I get to spawn them.
Also: Not intended as a threadjack whatsoever, I just posted the pic to say I know what you mean, then a lightbulb went off about refrigerating them so I figured I'd ask quick. No disrespect to your thread intended!

I'm sure they will manage for 2 days but tossing them in the fridge won't hurt either. It isn't necessary though.
6 shotguns isn't all that hard to build if you don't know what your doing but a greenhouse set up would be better for that many.
I wouldn't go with more than 2 blocks per 70 qt tote bin.
It would require a lot less research to just get the totes though.
You can get six of them for 30 bucks or so and a greenhouse set up will run you a little bit more than that.
Then there is the perlite but that isn't very expensive.
You can always build the shotguns and then just look more into the greenhouse for your next grow.
Less likelyhood of fucking things up.

If a greenhouse is only going to cost a little more than the $30 or so for that many totes, I may do some research into the greenhouse method. I thought that would run me much more, like closer to a hundred.
Thanks for the responses! Lookin forward to some more pics then.

I went straight into GH, but now attempting monos and SGFC. Prof is right about less chances of fucking up... my GH with humidibucket setup ran me about $80-$100 and was just as much maintenance as if I had fanned/misted a tote setup the whole time.

Thanks FT,
It is a good recipe. Lol, I developed it for my dog actually. I always just muscled it down and wanted him to start consuming reishi as he is aging. I knew he wasn't going to be having that taste so I decided to try preparing it with the method.
I ended up tasting a bit and couldn't believe it.
It actually gives it a pleasant taste!
I feed my 10 year old dog 9 grams of reishi a week!

Beautiful work Prof.
I grew Reishi and still have some dried fruits, but I have yet to work with them.
I may try your recipe out.
Take care,
JD
