Is this serious?
    #14987641 - 08/27/11 06:35 PM (1 year, 8 months ago)

I owe a fee to ebay from a time i sold something. i had thought i paid it but it turns out i didn't. Well they started sending emails about this matter, but since i don't have the money at the moment i can't pay it. Today i recently got a letter from a collections agency saying that i must pay for it. I really didn't think it would to be too serious. I get calls from them everyday but i don't answer. Now my question, how serious is this? should i pay as soon as possible. What can these collection agency really do?

I appreciate the help

eBay has your social security number, therefore they have access to report it to the credit bureau. Worst case scenario you take a hit on your credit score.

Not much they can do without a judgement - no way are they going to court for $35.

Better question; is $35 dollar worth taking a credit hit? IMO it is not worth it. How hard up are you?

qft.

My friend took out a title loan on her car, moved into an apt where the rent was free for the first three months, and then when the first 3mo was up she and her boyfriend took the car and took off.  Collections agencies and lawyers offices calling me nonstop (she apparently put me down as a pesronal reference).  I, of course, said i hadn't seen or heard from her in forever.

They eventually just assfucked her credit score - and now she has terrible troubles getting loans, apartments, etc.

lol. Just about everyone living in the States will give a crap about credit at some point in their life.

Guess what these things have in common? Getting an apartment, getting auto insurance, getting a job, financing a house, financing a car. A credit check is the common denominator.

You may not like how creditworthiness is determined, but you would be wise to play their game. It could mean thousands of dollars, a job or higher insurance rates.

I fucking hate credit scores. Its been fucking me for years and I wish I could just pay someone a couple grand to make it all go away instead of the years of work it will take to get a good one.

What is the hit?

As the collections agency has likely reported the debt proceeding to collections, if not ebay themselves as well, he will likely continue to have that reported regardless.  The only difference would be that by paying he will extend the time that the debt may be reported on his credit report and he will have the debt marked as paid after going to collections.

Will this help him?  My understanding is that FICO scores and other common scores generally don't distinguish signifigantly between paid and unpaid collections accounts, which makes sense from the point of a potential creditor looking at your report, because if the account is defaulted they get screwed anyways.

Do you have a different understanding?  I realize that the closed nature of the scoring algorithms in use generally makes comparisons difficult, but the reports from people monitoring such things tends to suggest the above is true.

The only instance I've heard of where paying a collections account matters for credit purposes is when its a demand of the potential creditor, which would generally be for a signifigant credit source, such as a car or house loan.  In those cases I've heard of banks who demand prior debts be settled as a condition of approval.

If anyone else knows otherwise I'd love to hear it.

If your so broke you can't afford $35 dolalrs then most likely the only thing they can do is report it to your credit report and harrass you via mail and phone.  They'll also potentially call your family and other relations that appear connected to you if needed to contact you.  Its illegal for them to communicate that your a debtor, but they'll figure it out, as who else calls for someone with a nasty attitude and won't say their purpose other than perhaps the police?

Paying the debt will extend the statutorily permissable reporting period in the US for consumer reporting purposes.

They could try to garnish or seize any assets you have, but nobody's going to do that for 35$ and you likely don't have anything they could garnish or take anyways.

So your exposure is limited to a bad credit score, i.e. not getting services on credit such as a phone service, most checking accounts, credit cards, cable TV, housing/apartments, higher insurance rates, et cet, however; as stated previously I regard it as questionable whether paying will amount to any signifigant difference, though I'm not confident due to the secretive nature of credit scoring algorithms and most approval/pricing criteria for credit-related services.

So how did Ebay not get the money?  I thought it just gets taken out of the price?  I never sold anything on ebay, so i have no clue.

Yea that's what i thought, i could have sworn i paid for it, but it turns out i payed for the paypal fees instead. Now i don't have the money anymore but i could have definitely paid for the fees had i known earlier. I'm still not sure if ebay made a mistake or they are just trying to get more money out of me. Hopefully I can pay by this week. Thanks all for your help.

Thanks johnm214, helpful information.

Sell your blood to a blood bank and/or be an experimental subject in a medical experiment to raise money to pay your debt.

idk about that one, i don't feel comfortable selling my blood for papers and being a guinea pig is out of the question, what if I end up in some mk-ultra type shit.  I'm going to have to come up with a way to get quick cash though because i still have like a 1000 dollar debt i owe the court. All because i had two unlicensed dogs and i wouldn't listen to the animal patrol.

I fucking love the laws.

I've had a few of those, I just ignored them and the agency never does anything about it.

Probably because the amount was so small.  They were always under $50

You gotta think are they really gonna spend the costs it takes to pursue it?  Probably not unless its a good amount.

Lol bollocks,
they are the biggest con out.  See the % they take from people.  Fuck em.

Besides the whole economy is run on debt meaning its actually impossible to pay off the national debt by design.  Good luck with that.

Pay off your friends and family but ebay?  I couldn't give a fuck about them.
