music is subjective. an infant's brain is plastic enough to recognize almost any kind of rhythm or melody, but after a few years of exposure to a specific culture's standard rhythms or melodies, the ability to recognize & enjoy rhythms/melodies that aren't standard within your culture deteriorates.

this is true, sort of, there are general accepted ideas and generally unaccepted ideas. Now this points out that ATDI and TMV are already apples vs oranges, where TMV is a conceptual piece of sound art basically, ATDI followed the traditional ideas of rock, two different approaches making them impossible to compare.  But I suggested this as it's my personal preference and is more popular w/ most of the musicians I know. ATDI took what was at the time very popular here in the tx underground scene, screamo (the orchid/saetia/level plane rec. style), blending it with what was becoming popular on a much grander scale, the deftones and glassjaw style of nu-metal/post-hardcore (not the best way to describe these genres, but I feel is the most widely identifiable while still getting the point across). They created an incredible style and explored it well. This style is the basic formula of most of the earlier TMV works before they had really grown into their own sound. Again, while it may be comparing apples and oranges, it's not an acceptable argument to state TMV would be better, for the 1000x more risk they (arguably) pulled off, than ATDI when the cornerstone of their music was built on where ATDI left off.

and this doesn't begin get into the differences between the two live.
