Anyone know of some good books on psychedelics or mild altering substances that can be useful in spiritualism or shamanism.

If you're into Timothy Leary and Ram Dass, you could check out The Psychedelic Experience (which I'm sure you've at least heard of), and Remember: Be Here Now. In my opinion, they're both kind of nutty, but if you're into that sort of mix of Eastern spirituality and psychedelics, that'd be a good place to start.

I've heard The Way of the Shaman, by Michael Harner, is great. I haven't personally read it.

I just read a great book called "Returning to Sacred World: A Spiritual Toolkit for the Emerging Reality" by Stephen Gray. The focus is on "Shamanism, Buddhism, Sacred Plants, Enlightened Societies". It's a good read and has helpful suggestions for incorporating sacred plants in ritual.

one day i will get pharmacotheon. i opted for the encyclopedia of psychoactive plants by ratsch instead.
i second the archaic revival. you dont have to believe any of it, but the fact that those ideas were even thought of should give you some kind of clue
i know this isnt exactly what youre asking for, but i reccomend getting the complete works of william blake. its astonishingly psychedelic. that said, the more knowledge you have beforehand, the more you get out of it.
the same for finnegans wake, which i dont reccomend anymore because everytime i do, people think im a nutcase.

I have about 60 dollars to spend right now :P, though I already looked into the pharmacotheon and encyclopedia of psychoactive plants.
And I am not sure that Archaic revival is what I am looking for at the moment.
I have picked a few books already from the suggestions listed and I am considering the works of william blake.
What is finnegans wake about? Is it fictional, also if I do decide to get it does someone know where I can find the republished version of the third edition?
I am almost ready to order, though I am going to wait a few more hours for some suggestions from you guys and see if I can't find anything else that piques my interest.
So far I picked
Plant Spirit Shamanism: Traditional Techniques for Healing the Soul
The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead (Citadel Underground)
Journey of Awakening: A Meditator's Guidebook
but the list could change at any time :P

i would suggest the psychedelic experience is an irrelevant, long winded piece of shit. {just my opinion} ,i'm sure many believe it's a must read , but alot of those people have never read it.

im sure anything you pick, youll learn something from
20 bucks or so should get you the complete works of blake, without the painting/engravings, which you can look up online, and aren't entirely necesary, but man are they beautiful.
you will often find people writing the books yr interested in quoting him, james joyce especially. it freaks me out sometimes when im reading a legitamite "scientific" book and they quote joyce...
i wouldnt call finnegans wake fiction, or anything for that matter. it starts in the middle of a sentence and ends in the beginnning of that same sentence. its a HUGE symbol/work of art. it using like, 60 or so languages. you need to know things about history and myth and etymology, but not really, because it takes a long time to learn. its a lot of work to enjoy the book, but its worth it. like i always say, the more you put in the more you get out. i reccomend getting the skeletons key guide to finnegans wake if youre really going to make an effort. its by joseph campbell, and his "masks of god" series is probably the best four books youll ever read on mythology/religious history. it helps to read ulysses by joyce first, its good one.(tedious, for most, but truly great)
i could go on and on about finns wake, but ill just say this
i probably read the first 15 pages before i asked myself what the hell am i reading. what the hell just happened?
later, sitting in class continuing to read later in the book, i fell asleep. i saw what was happening in my dreams. (it was the part where the four poster bed is judging hce)(itll make sense eventually)
anyway, those who have read finnegans wake, i salute you. even if it made no fucking sense and was a waste of time lol

Buy Lorenzo's audiobook: "The Genesis Generation".
McKenna has got good stuff but if you're not looking for that you're not looking for that. You've got a good start there.

Yeah, its pretty much nonsense, like I said. The "practical" advice section wasn't even that helpful, but it was a breath of fresh air after the meat of the book. Interesting read, but mostly nonsense.

A little more on my post about The Walk of the Shaman...if you're specifically interested in Shamanism, while I'm not sure if it covers psychedelics, I've been told it's a fantastic read on core Shamanism, without any cultural adaptations. It's supposed to be more than enough to get you well along the path.
Granted, I was told this at a class taught by a former student of his, so take that with a grain of salt if you like.

well, lemme point out that the one of the best books on shamanism, called, shamanism, by mircea eliade, barely mentions psychoactive plants. its worth reading, but it can be disappointing if yr not ready for it

psychedelic shamanism by jim dekorne- i've read it over and over and over, in my opinion it's the best book on shamanic techniques using plants ever written
