I think electronic / jam music has corrupted me
    #14929263 - 08/15/11 10:39 PM (9 months, 6 days ago)

I find electronic sets or shows where the bands play shit other than a carbon copy of their CD to be FAR more interesting than some hipster indie band.  Today, some kid showed me this CD by the Horrors and they seemed pretty good--I guess.  Just couldn't get into em.  I was like when does the interesting part start?  Intriguingly, they have a very high ratio of likes / dislikes on youtube which makes me think perhaps maybe I'm off based here.  Of course I am free to like what I want; however, I still ponder to what extent the music I listen to closes doors to other musical avenues :gethigh:  Especially where aesthetic taste is pretty much impossible to quantify, how does one know if they are going up or down?  Thoughts?

Isn't McDonalds the number one restaurant in the US?  High ratio of likes to dislikes is no indication of goodness, if anything it's the opposite.  I just checked out The Horrors on youtube, awful, generic, tired crap, like most music these days, especially popular music.

I'm still listening to The Horrors.  It's really bad.  Eight notes per measure of fuzzed out bass, generic, uninspired rock drums, stupid lyrics about a girl who told him she cries, stupid, tired chord progression heard a billion times.  It just sucks.  Most music does.  These forms have been beaten to death.  Fucks like The Horrors don't care about making music, they care about the whole rock thing, which is bullshit, fame, popularity, self-worth derived from being in the band.  It's really bad stuff.  Hope can almost not be considered.  The reason a band like Tool is great, despite their weaknesses, is that they work in little explored rhythmic territory.  This is what rock needs if it is to be revitalized.  Listen to The Mars Volta, or Omar Rodriguez Lopez solo stuff.  Or a handful of other popular musicians who are doing something new and vital.  Fuck all this indie rock throwback garbage as well as most "jam" and dance oriented electronic music.  All guilty of the same.

I feel what your saying. Don't worry about what the majority consider good though, too many people just don't really GET music. Not that it's their fault or anything; we're fed crap music from the second our parents turn on the car radio as a baby, from the minute we watch our first music video program or the moment we learn what music our peers approve of. We are sold music as an image, just like most things in our society today. I say fuck that. I'm going to listen to what I enjoy, what really gets me going and what really makes my brain work overtime.

I like your comparison of electronic music to indie music too lol. That said, all genres have their gems, you gotta remember that. Indie is a current fad so I wouldn't even bother searching through all the trash out there to find a good indie band. All I'm saying is there's so real fucking interesting music out there that's not electronic. Most of the music I listen to that's from the last decade or so is either electronic or jazz though coz a lot of genres are just full of shit atm.

Also like the guy above said  - The Mars Volta are alright... I don't personally listen to em though, I over did it with them a few years back.

fuckin jam bands are the equivalent of watching a sports team practice. It's cool it shows you're a real fan, there's nothing wrong with it, but everybody knows the real games are where it's at.

Well said; I completely agree with you.  Reminds me of a buddy's obsession with gangster rap.  He adamantly refused to listen to anything else and based this refusal on his hope that listening to the music over and over would make him rich and powerful.  :strokebeard:  I'll have to check out this Mars Volta.  I keep hearing things about them on these boards.

I wouldn't expect someone 10 years late on mars volta to understand my analogy. Nor would I trust their musical opinions. Do yourself a favor, skip mars volta and jam some at the drive in.

That's like telling an 8th grader, "Do yourself a favor, skip high school and go back to 5th grade."  Yeah, At the Drive-in are great but TMV are much greater in just about every way, or at least aren't something that should be skipped in favor of the members' earlier band.

neah at the drive in was so much more raw. have you seen both live? the mars volta is their grown up old guy band while at the drive was the rawer young party band, if you were to give them personas.

Who the fuck is ben cook and why should anyone care that he thinks that "most people are fucking clueless sometimes when it comes to music"?  I think that too but I wouldn't quote myself on it in a discussion as if that somehow lent my argument more validity.

Woah man, ATDI was so much more raw and young party guys, yeah, because raw young party guys make better music than older guys right?  You must think punk rock is like, the best music ever man, it's like so much raw-er than that old guy music.  Fuck sakes, TMV takes 1,000x more risks than their younger raw party guy counterparts could have dreamed of doing.

I love At the Dirve-In. I love The Mars Volta.

Thing is, they're two completely different bands, playing two completely different styles of music. Also only two members of atdr are in tmv... Just saying , you guys are comparing apples and oranges. Good music is good, enjoy it.

music is subjective. an infant's brain is plastic enough to recognize almost any kind of rhythm or melody, but after a few years of exposure to a specific culture's standard rhythms or melodies, the ability to recognize & enjoy rhythms/melodies that aren't standard within your culture deteriorates.

The best music is the stuff that is a perfect blend between electronic and real instruments. There are so many crazy things that you can only do with instruments, and there are probably 5 times as many different crazy things that you can only do with synthesizers.

As for this whole jam band discussion... a jam band is good when it can make epic songs up on the spot. If their jams sound like a band practicing, then they are obviously a shitty jam band.

The Mars Volta would be great instead of just somewhat good if they would get rid of their awful singer. A good band has to have strength in every area... so if you aren't going to go purely instrumental (which would make TMV 10x better), at least get a good fucking singer.
