Doctor participates in bizarre magic mushroom trial
    #14899449 - 08/10/11 12:31 AM (9 months, 12 days ago)

A mind-bending documentary series
August 10, 2011 - Montreal Gazette

Doctor participates in bizarre magic mushroom trial

About a year ago, Dr. Michael Mosley participated in the U.K.'s first scientific trial of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms.

He took the drug while filming his BBC series The Brain: A Secret History (Documentary, 9 p.m.), airing Wednesday on a CBC digital channel.

"It was one of the strangest experiences of my life," he would write later in a piece for U.K.'s Beckley Foundation, a charitable trust that investigates consciousness and drugpolicy research.

But because psilocybin is hallucinogenic, it was also disturbing, Mosley recalled: "After a thorough physical examination, I was placed in a brain scanner, so the (research) team could map in detail how my brain reacted.

"Then the drug was injected. For an instant, there was nothing. Then it was like that moment in a Star Trek film when the spaceship goes into hyperdrive. The walls of the scanner dissolved and I took off to the stars. I saw intense colours and patterns. It was beautiful, but disturbing."

As explored in Wednesday's episode (the first of three), titled Mind Control, the point of the exercise was to try to understand how the mindbending properties of drugs such as psilocybin can change the brain.

Mosley also examines the brutal history of experimental psychology, tracing the sinister ways this science has been used to try to control the mind.

Extraordinary original films capture what happened: scientists systematically changing children's behaviour; lawabiding citizens administering fatal electric shocks; a gay man getting electrodes implanted in his head in an attempt to change his sexuality.

The next two episodes will follow on consecutive Wednesdays: Emotions on Aug. 17, and Broken Brains on Aug. 24.

What a surprise that he would have a disturbing trip with such a great setting.

I read more into these UK trials and it appears most people were In an MRI during a majority of the trip. I have had to sit in MRI machines for over an hour at a time. They are uncomfortable and loud and move. Id probably have a terrible time tripping in one.

Only a small portion of The Brain: A Secret History actually deals with psilocybin, but it is an extraordinary fascinating, series. It aired in the UK months ago and is apparently just making it's way to Canada. I don't know when it airs in the USA. But you can view the whole show here:

Very interesting.

Saw it when it aired a few months back, well worth a watch. Moseley's overall impression of psilocybin was a postive one, MRI machine or no. A good unbiased docu.

Certainly not a magic mushroom trial; just psilocybin.  Injecting psilocybin is an extraordinarily different experience from eating mushrooms.

He sure he wasn't injected with DMT?  I wish my mushroom trips would take me to the stars, DMT is the closest I've been.

I just read society's quote...I was unaware the experience was that different.

Yeah, was it psilocin injection or pslocybin injection?

It should say an active ingredient.  Though psilocybin and psilocin are considered "main" ingredients, baeocystin and norbaeocystin are also present.  Not to mention that injecting a chemical isolate will simply inherently be a different experience than consuming raw or dried mushrooms.

If you have ever read reports of people eating the chemical psilocin, you'll noticed that it is generally described as being quite different than eating shrooms.
