This is for males and females, but since I'm male I'll mostly be speaking from that perspective 
I own or have tried pretty much every kind of underwear. They're all good in their own ways and they provide different kinds of support (or lack thereof), but going with what I assume will be the general consensus here since it is just about everywhere, Boxer-Briefs own my heart and my undercarriage. Well, boxer-briefs and my girlfriend.
If I'm running or otherwise doing heavy physical activity I have a few pairs of those super tiny low-rise briefs with no fly that are all like spandex and shit but even then it depends on the situation; I'd rather wear boxer-briefs to a rave over some crazy binding shit like that. All my early raves involved tighty whities which used to be my favorite, and I spent pretty much the whole night adjusting myself every time. Since then I've stopped supporting briefs (since they stopped supporting me). They used to be my favorite but it just doesn't work anymore

For the girls, any granny panties? bra-less? other oddities I'm not aware of because I'm an outtie?

I like boxers/commando for normal wear and boxer-briefs for running.

As a male, I tend to always wear boxer briefs. I'll occasionally slip into a pair of silk boxers, or go comando in sweats, for the girlie at night.
On the girlie, I prefer different panties on different occasions.

Boxer-Briefs unless I am wearing skinny jeans, then briefs(preferably not white ones)

Boxers when it's warm, boxer-briefs when it is cooler or if I'm running. Or I'll use what is clean 
For the ladies I'm going with 'boy shorts' as a hands down favorite.
