redoing holes on sgfc with cakes INSIDE...safe?
    #14630066 - 06/17/11 09:59 PM (2 years, 2 days ago)

I just got word from rr that I might not be getting sufficient fae because I had to use a soldering iron to make the holes and the holes are 1/8 inch wide.

Would it be safe to make more holes with the cakes INSIDE the sgfc? The plastic would be melting and the cakes would get the vapors.

If it's better to just empty it all out, cakes, perlite and all, what's the best way to go about doing that? Where should I set the cakes down at? Would I need to redrain the perlite?

Put the cakes anywhere but in the terrarium.  If you have to 'drain' the perlite, it means you didn't drill holes on the bottom.  You need to clean out the terrarium, empty the perlite and cakes, and then drill 1/4" holes every two inches on all six sides.

Since you used the wrong size cakes, they're probably dry, so you can re-dunk during the process.  Boil the perlite and then drop it back in after you're done.

This should have been added to your other thread rather than starting a new one.

I used tall 1/2 pint cakes. I thought those were the right ones. I know everyone uses wide mouthed, but they're unavailable where I live. I thought the tall ones had the same volume of mass as the wide mouthed ones?

That's a LOT of perlite to boil. Are you serious?

If you know everyone uses the wide-mouth jars wide would you think the tall ones "were the right ones"? They may have the same volume but it is distributed differently in each jar. Tall ones are prone to stalling before fully colonizing, among other things. Not saying that they won't work, just that short wide-mouthed ones work more -gooder.

You sure are a quite the whiner for being a "perfectionist". If you don't want to boil all that perlite than buy new stuff. If you don't have the cash than you got some boiling to do.

Remember you don't HAVE to do anything, you can go back to buying your shrooms from the grocery store and the dopeman, just saying.

If you gotta ask its probably no lol err on the side of caution, and remember RR has a method to his madness. Boiling the perlite will clean it well and prevent further heartache. I've used a 105qt tub with 3 bags of perlite in it, pain in the ass- yes, worth it- hells to the yeah!

Good luck!

I'd say 5-10 minutes at a full boil, and be sure to stir and strain. You'll probably need to resoak after they cool as the water will evaporate quickly after the boil.
