Very useful and free photography processing programs.
    #14544127 - 06/01/11 01:35 AM (11 months, 20 days ago)

I was initially going to post this in the mushroom photography tips thingy, but either it's been locked or I am being a drunken fool.

Gimp - Totally awesome and free editing program, which is very intuitive and easy to use.

Picturenaut - Free HDR (High Dynamic Range) program.  Allows the user to combine multiple versions of the same picture with different exposure settings, allowing dark areas of a shot to be lit up fully without creating problems in the lighter areas of a shot.

CombineZP - Free focus stacking software.  Allows combining of multiple versions of the same image taken at different focus distances to allow for a greater depth of field, paticularily useful in macro photography and microscopy.

If these links could be added to the photography tips post that would be awesome.

Cheers.  :mushroom2:

Cool stuff! thanks! That last one does sound pretty useful for the microscopy.

Yes, very useful

Tried posting this earlier, but the boards were being backed up at that moment.

unless you have an attached camera i would think it would be near impossible for this to come out right without microscopy, it works like an hdr image except with focus only right? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Focus_stacking_Tachinid_fly.jpg

can someone confirm that this would be useless without a tripod or attached lens?

Picsa 3 is another great free editing program. Very easy to use with one click fixes, and some cool effects. Pretty basic program, but very smooth.

I can't verify this for you as I don't have a microscope, I am more interested in it's macro photography uses.  I would assume you are correct though, it probably wouldn't be very succesful without a fixed camera.

Alan could probably shed some more light on it, it was one of his posts that tipped me off about the program, I had only seen rather expensive versions of the same thing about.

I met a girl at Make Faire that put a stepper motor on the fine focus of her microscope and built an arduino controller for her camera to automate the process of taking multiple pictures of an object at different focal depths.  Since the difference in focal depth is consistent due to the use of a stepper motor, CombineZP works even better.

What a sensational job, and complete with biohazard sticker.  That comparison photo is amazing

I possibly need to rethink my method for meeting women, there is never anyone this cool at the pub.
