Where do our interests come from?
    #14482094 - 05/19/11 11:31 PM (1 year, 8 days ago)

How do humans develop their interests?
I'm talking about the things that people get passionate about.
Whatever those things are... where does the passion for a certain hobby or trade come from?
Are most of our interests developed in childhood?
Are they chemical?
Are chemicals in the brain in charge of our interests?
Can we choose to be interested in things that we absolutely have no interest in or hate?
I haven't given this any thought before and thought about it yesterday.
I believe it defines a lot of what an individual will accomplish in their life.
What do you think?

A passion for a certain hobby means that you care about it and are reliable with in the community.  If you are passionate about building houses and you deeply care about them, how they look and how they will come out and what they can be used for.  Other people in the community will see this and no longer just see you as a person, but a person with a skill set that is an asset to the community.  After you are done building your own house other people will pay you to build theirs...

Just an example but it could be about anything really, some interests have nothing to do with benefiting society and that is because not all people will benefit society:shrug:

Just my POV... not saying it's the right answer.  I have a biological lens on when looking at philosophy much of the time because biology makes a lot of sense to me.

they come from desire

there's a beautiful sky tonight and
if you were by my side, then we could share it but you're gone
so come at me with your moon, and burn me in the stars
cause nothing matters anymore
if i could only see you now, for about an hour
maybe just a minute, just to ask
what he's got that i don't have?
is it his brown eyes?
i know blue eyes get boring but i'll wear dark glasses all the time and
hey if you want me to, i'll take a knife to my own bright eyes

this is one of the most important questions
it is one you can solve incrementally and meaningfully for your self.
In my opinion this question is much more compelling than the one about free will, and in fact it contains everything that free will attempts to address.
after all
you may actually come to understand and communicate what "interest" means, but the term "will" which is hard to pinpoint in meaning relates just as much to a politic that is not necessarily personal.

as for where the interests come from, size rhythm, resonance, learning by example, stories, movies, association with archetypes and adult models during youth.... (culture)

People come here just to have their ideas deconstructed by OC. For many, it is an honor.

here the leader type adults assemble and may seem to be archetypes that the younger members may become interested in emulating.
here the culture ferments.
does the interest bubble up in the mash?

watching interest is like studying attention
it is the essence of insight meditation.

Have you chosen the things you believe in, or have they actually chosen you?

i think interests develop through good experiences. in essence, your pursuit of the thing you enjoyed, your interest, is your attempt to reconnect with the good experience from the past that was associated with the thing that interests you.

perhaps it's music you're interested in, or even a particular type of music, or a particular band, or album, or song, or instrument. this could be because said music/song/instrument was played at a very positive moment in your life, wherein you noticed the new stimulus and since your mood was already high you were more likely to take notice of the music and its complexities and become fascinated by it. now that the good moment and the music are associated you can bring that good moment back by listening to that song again or playing that instrument.

thats my brief take on it. it should be noted that the same thing could be said with things you dislike/are disinterested in, just with negative connotations.

your personality constitutes a platform
when input matches your particular platform or personality (music, art, all kinds of info)
interest sparks immediately
learning is changing and a changed being can connect to new things
and so the journey continues

interest is the attraction (tropism in the total organism - i.e of the personality)
disinterest is the rejection (tropism)

each tropism or movement or inclination to move combines together into a totality of self.

if you decide you want to move in a new direction, or be transformed, you need to cultivate interests that will perform the tropism or movement.

Here is some food for thought: Quite a few interests are self-propagating. How and in what sense do they become "my" interests? I know some of my interests existed before I was born. But they weren't "my" interests then, how could they be?
