problems with oak seedlings
    #14293383 - 04/15/11 01:24 AM (2 years, 1 month ago)

Howdy folks. Not exactly ethno related but I like everyone here and yall know your stuff. So anyone sprouted any tree seedlings?

I germed some live oak (Quercus virginiana) acorns that I collected in southern Louisiana visiting the folks for the holidays.
About half took off and are growing pretty well and moving faster and faster.
Big question is how long should I keep them in those containers before transplanting?

Thanks a lot!

I've done quite a few different trees in my time. Mostly nursery stuff and NZ natives.

At the moment at work I'm in a constant battle with oak leaves and they're driving me crazy. It's Autumn here. :leafromp:

I agree with eLShaMukO  about giving them their own pots. You might have to remove them together with the soil, then dump them on a bench to tease the roots apart so you limit damage to them.

I usually prefer to germinate seeds on a wet towel then put them individually in pots to minimize transplant shock.

however a decent method I've tried is to carefully wash all the soil away your crowded seedling until the roots are exposed so that you can untangle them out without moving blind.

I have a conundrum...to play favorites and choose the ones I can make space for or buy another shop light and set up a small-scale tree nursery?

Anyways, thanks for the insight. Will figure something out this weekend while I have a break from school.

for most trees i tend to do a 3 step approach.  first like your seedling trays.  second pot into bigger pots, say 6-12" and palce under shade cloth.  young plants and direct sun dont play well together a lot of the time.  once larger then plant them in ground.

Thanks for the guidance kada.
Now that I've got my feet wet I plan on germing more acorns every year and once I get enough rolling I'll get them planted in the ground a few at a time.

Got another question about these seedlings, figured I'd post here instead of a new thread...

Anyways, I've noticed some of the leaves are curling all weird and have what look like small bite marks.
Tiny black flying insects about 1-2 cm have been spotted around them lately and a strange white material on top the soil that seems like mold of some kind but figure it's from the bugs.
I've got these indoors, there's a fan by them for circulation, any input on these invaders would be cool. They must be destroyed.

Sooo...I'm also having some oak issues, but this was straight up plant abuse.
He was germinating, doin his thing, and I thought he could use some help cracking his nut, so I just pried on him a little, and ended up splitting him in twine.
Funny thing how resilient plants can be.

The cotyledon he's showing is new, and roots appeared and wrapped around what was left of the shell.
Could look cool and bizarre if he keeps chugging along.

Perhaps they're in the family Aleyrodidae. You might have a whitefly problem. Regardless, the solution is the same: Neem Oil.

Hmm they don't look like whitefly, thinking its actually fungus gnats.
Never used neem oil but assuming there are larvae in the soil would I just add some to water and soak the roots?
