Naked teen found in mall trash bin tells police he did 'shrooms
April 5, 2011 - mcall.com
A 15-year-old boy was cited for disorderly conduct Monday night after he was found naked in a trash container at the Whitehall Mall, apparently under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms, Whitehall Township police said.
The boy, from Whitehall, was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown, where his parents picked him up, police Lt. Ribello Bertoni said.
About 11 p.m., Whitehall police received a report of a naked man walking in the street in the area of Mickley and MacArthur roads, Bertoni said.
Later, police received a report that someone got into a trash container behind a clothing store at the Whitehall Mall, he said.
When police located the man, he told them he was under the influence of "'shrooms," Bertoni said.
'Shrooms refers to psilocybin mushrooms, which can be chewed or eaten to produce hallucinogenic effects, Bertoni said, adding that mushroom use in this area is rare because they grow and are more common in warmer climates.
The hallucinogenic compounds in mushrooms -- psilocybin and psilocin -- are controlled substances, according to Joseph P. Stauffer, chief detective of the Lehigh County Drug Task Force.
Cetronia ambulance took the boy to the hospital for treatment and evaluation. Bertoni said the boy had been reported missing to Coplay police moments before he was found wandering the streets naked.
Whitehall police said they found no evidence of mushrooms with the boy.
