I can tell you it's a proud feeling when you walk into the supermarket and see your own mushrooms in the produce section with a bold sign saying 'Locally Grown'. It's a lot of work getting there, but worth it the first time you see the above. RR

In kentucky, zone 6b, if that helps.
after reading how hard it is to grow nameko, maitake, and shiitake, i may just grow all the cold weather mushrooms on logs. so I'd have kuritake, maitake, lions mane, and shiitake all when its cooler but have pink oysters in the summer. sounds like a plan

Yeah man, I am starting out with one of these, until I get my lot set up.
I bid on one and it cost me about 80$ shipped, it is really small, but easy to move, and I think i'll prob use it for oysters after I get my lot set up. This will be my main. I haven't decided on which one exactly yet, but they seem decently priced.
Here is the site that sells them, they have many styles.

I am also going to add one of these tarps over the top, so I can either reflect or absorb the energy from the sun.

Good luck in your endeavour.

I am in the midwest. My focus will be shiitake, I plan on using oysters and a bit of reishi as well. I want to eventually grow out every gourmet and medicinal atleast once.
There is a lot of work, time, and money involved. 1500$ is not really going to cut it to get everything your going to need and provide the power and water.
So don't quit your day job! I would say to treat it as a hobby, until you are able to determine your profits. Once you are out of the red, then you can consider making it into a business.
How did you go about getting the $1500?
The city lots I'm looking at are going for $250 each. I am still working out the tape, If they are going to give me too much of a hassle about it, then I will prob just find another place to setup.
The city can be your best ally or worse enemy.
I am using the majority of my student loan money for it.

Someone just had a section in the newspaper about it. I think Kentucky took a bunch of the taxes from the tobacco companies and were giving it back to folks in grants. Anyone who had anything to do with agriculture could get it.
I have about $1000 saved up on top of the $1500, so that'll come in handy.
If your main focus is shiitake, i would recommend having a few logs, just in case a grow contaminates or whatever. You can get a wide-range strain so it can fruit in all the seasons. here's the link if you want to check it out: http://www.shroomery.org/8531/Getting-a-Year-round-Harvest-from-Japanese-Forest-Mushrooms

this isnt going to happen. the guy i was talking to said a 12 x 12 x 8 building made of cement blocks is going to be $8500. not including the labor or slab. the grant wont cover labor anyway. i may just get some wide-range shiitake dowels and sell a few shiitakes every now and then

It will be less than half that to build it yourself. Add a bit more for concrete, because you'll want to pour all the voids in the blocks to give an 8" solid concrete wall. You definitely want something you can take a high pressure hose to daily, so concrete or rock is the way to go.
If you have a lot of natural rock in your area, you can build it for the cost of the mortar. Here's the entrance to our farm, now that it's finished. There's about 200 eighty pound bags of mortar and concrete in that 24" thick, ten feet high entrance/retaining wall. The rocks were free, other than the sore muscles to load them into my pickup and the gas to bring them home. RR

even if it is less than half, i still cant afford that. he said the blocks were about 4 or 5 dollars a piece. i did get confused earlier, the $8500 includes labor
I may buy a 16 x 16 greenhouse like teknix mentioned http://growerssolution.com/page/GS/PROD/hobby/16ftquonsetpkg i could just lay the bottom with black plastic(to create more humidity and prevent water from gathering) and spray the inside with a hose everyday and let it get natural sunlight then i would just replace the plastic once a year or whenever/if it gets moldy, install a few fans, and see about where i could hang oyster bags.

I can get 8 X 16 concrete blocks for $1.25 each. Check at home depot or a building supply center near you. You'll want to get them delivered because you can only carry about 50 on a pickup truck without breaking the springs. You'll also need several pallets of concrete and mortar mix, and a few hundred feet of steel rebar to put into the slab and the interior of the blocks before you fill them with concrete. RR
