Lawmakers Consider Medical Marijuana Dispensaries February 24, 2011 - wptz.com
MONTPELIER, VT -- The Vermont Legislature is considering a bill that would create two medical marijuana dispensaries, licensed by the state, to allow for the legal purchase of cannabis by anyone with a prescription.
Under the current law, there is no legal way for medical marijuana patients to legally purchase their drugs.
"It has to magically appear in my pocket," joked medical marijuana patient Larry Phillips.
He says it creates a dangerous situation, where he has to purchase pot illegally from the black market drug trade.
"I've been robbed, I've been threatened, and I've had friends that have been robbed and threatened. It's just not a good situation," he said.
"We've had calls from 85-year-old women saying, 'What am I supposed to do, ask my grandson?'" said State Sen. Jeanette White, D-Windham County.
White, a co-sponsor of the bill, said it would keep patients safe while regulating the sale of the drug. But there is opposition from local police and the Department of Public Safety, who worry the dispensaries will lead to increased crime and even more free-flowing drugs.
"The dispensaries could be infiltrated by an organized crime unit that supplies the marijuana," said Newport Police Chief J. Paul Duquette. "You could have a clerk that diverts it and sells it out the back door, you could have robberies, burglaries, and driving under the influence of marijuana."

That's already happening out the back door of regular houses. They can't stop it. This is better anyway you put it. I wonder how many drunk drivers they have a day? No one is bitching about that. Obviously, you don't have "organized crime units" infiltrating gas stations with illegal alcohol and clerks diverting it. If they did, they would be fined and lose their alcohol license. It won't be any different for a MMJ clinic.
