Developer of medical marijuana patch eyes Colorado market

A Seattle company has developed a marijuana patch — just like a nicotine patch — and is planning to begin producing it in Colorado and California by the end of the year.
“The advent of medical marijuana has created some controversy in the United States,” said Jim
Alekson, spokesman for Medical Marijuana Delivery Systems LLC, which recently bought the patent rights for the patch and similar lotions and gels from a New Mexico inventor. “Bringing along a modality such as the patch, the lotions the gels, is a way to bring this to people in a more acceptable modality.”
By moving away from smoking marijuana as the preferred delivery method, Alekson said his company hopes to increase public acceptance and speed revisions in the law to permit medical marijuana in more places. He also said having an alternative to smoking would help young or elderly patients who are unable to smoke.
Medical Marijuana Delivery Systems plans to find local partners to manufacture and distribute the patches.
Alternative delivery methods have become common as the medical marijuana industry becomes more established, including marijuana soft drinks, teas and candy bars.
