Eywa's Spores to More Mycelium Cardboard Tek

This tek does away with a lot of pitfalls with making a LC or an agar plate from scratch, the only downside is you should use a spore print to make it work instead of a syringe. The spores aren't concentrated enough in most syringes for this tek to work. The main advantages are that it works under less than sterile conditions, and selects for healthy cellulose digesting strains that will almost always get ropey rhisomorphic mycelium that grows great healthy mushrooms.
Materials needed:
Cheap cardboard box, the Chinese toy shipping boxes from walmart work quite well. Some sort of sugar-water, can use plain sugar, honey or corn syrup Plastic zip-lock snack bags or pitri dishes spring or bottled water Spore print.
Equipment needed:
A microwave oven Forceps or tweezers that have been sanitized A syringe or medicine dropper that has been previously sanitized or better yet sterilized A long needle to scrape the spores and deposit them on the cardboard lighter to flame the needle with Coffee cup
The tek:
First nuke the cardboard in a minimal amount of water in the microwave on HI for about a minute. Then while still hot transfer to your plastic bag or pitri dish and cover it. Next put some sugar, corn syrup, or honey in water about 3% solution is ideal by weight/weight and microwave on high in a coffee cup until it boils vigorously. Allow to cool on it's own accord. Next fame sterilize the needle and allow it to cool. Then scrape enough spores from your print until you can see a glob of spores at the end and quickly deposit on the cardboard, make sure you rub them in a little. Next with your sterilized medicine dropper withdraw some of the now cold microwaved sugar water and place a single drop directly on the spot you put the spores on the cardboard. Finally seal the zip lock bag or pitri dish and put in a warm dark place for a week. When you retrieve it a week later, your cardboard should have healthy mycelium on it. From here you can go to either a LC, a grain jar, or culture tube for safekeeping. This technique also works great for cloning mushrooms too! Hope this helps you!

It is good for starting mycelium from a spore print and auto-selection of good strains.

And after you grow some myc on your cardboard you have to get some piece's of it to grain. Or did you plan to throw that cardboard to your "Eywa's Extra Magical Magic Mushroom Substrate!"
So you can skip that "Eywa's Spores to More Mycelium Cardboard Tek" and innoc. the grain direct with spores.
Cardboard is useful if you want to clone a strain under less sterile conditions. But it is not nearly new.
Im looking forward to your next invention.

This tek is for germinating spores, not just cloning. It germinates spores, selects good strains, and generates a live tissue culture in one easy step. Spores will not germinate easily on plain cardboard, but they will easily do so with a trace of sugar added to it.
Yes, you can skip the grain step and go straight to a bulk style substrate like the eywa substrate since it selects for strains that can thrive on less than ideal starting substrates high in cellulose. You would just want to use a half quart or so of it to get the spawn started then break it up and start your bulk project.

I'd like to see pics and your control runs, please.

So put mycelium cardboard in a LC and hope everything goes well.
Riiight. This is just as good as the semi solid agar LC tek.

No, seriously, you can grow myc on cardboard under less sterile conditions but what will you do with it????? The cardboard is contaminated, even if the contams doesn't breed on the cardboard. They will breed at the moment when you get it to Grain, Substrate or whatever. Cardboard if fun but not useful to skip sterilizing process.

yea i know that i have mycelium running but under less than sterile environments i wouldn't put cardboard in a LC.

Well put. I was using a tek like this for a while, but kept getting contamination. It's a decent substitute for agar or LC, but hard to get results that are not contaminated.

The idea is to use it with a wild specimen -> cardboard then move myc -> agar for further cleaning.
This thread fails to deliver.
