Defendants from a drug bust called the biggest in the city’s history are facing prison sentences up to 20 years.
Seven defendants pleaded guilty to drug charges in Morgan County Circuit Court on Monday in lieu of going to trial.
Criminal jury trials are under way this week.
Officers of a joint operation that included Decatur police and Alabama Beverage Control Board agents began a roundup in May of 107 suspects indicted by a grand jury. Some suspects are on this week’s trial docket.
The charges they face range from possession of a controlled substance tosale and distribution of a controlled substance.
The district attorney’s office started settling cases Thursday, and some of the defendants from the drug sting negotiated plea deals. Sentencing hearings are set for April and August, and all of the defendants have applied for probation.
District Scott Anderson said some are first-time offenders, while others are habitual offenders who face longer sentences. Some defendants will likely do prison time, he said.
“We are opposing probation for most of them,” said Anderson. “It’s our general rule that if there’s a guilty plea for sales or distribution, we oppose probation.”
Former Decatur Police Chief Ken Collier said the department’s Organized Crime Unite officers initially conducted undercover buys in Decatur. As the sting progressed, it went outside the city into Hartselle, rural Morgan County, Athens and Limestone County. Street-level to mid-level and major drug traffickers were targeted, he said.
More defendants from the bust could settle cases throughout this week, Anderson said.

I think they could do something better with $40,000 a year per person, but the cycle continues.

Yeah that's pretty ridiculous, so many young kids going away for 10+ years in hard prison. At that young of an age going in for such an extended stay you might as well give them life sentences cause they're sure as hell going to be totally different people that may not be able to handle this life in 10-20 when they're getting out.
Our government chooses not to help people only punish them.

I know. You figure they would know they are paying high income taxes to pay for their incarceration. I'm going to go to their court dates. I just hate it, because if I go to one individuals, I will have to go to everyones'. I can't let a single person suffer. It's all or none. I just don't have the time to do that though.

I read that thanks to you. Totally . Fear keeps most from knowing their and other's rights. It's all a matter of time before we win. Can't keep us down forever.
-------------------- In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.
