Paper about chimeric fruit bodies
    #10839971 - 08/11/09 01:38 PM (2 years, 9 months ago)

Found a discussion in a book called "Ecology of saprotrophic basidiomycetes" on Google books regarding chimeric fruit bodies. A reference is made to a paper where the authors grew different strains of Pholiota nameko in the same vessel, and the fruits that emerged from where the strains met were clearly chimeric. Very nice and visual evidence.

The discussion goes on about a chimera from Coprinus miser and C. pellucidus. Both types of spores were formed by the fruit body, and both of the species could be recovered by outgrowth of stem pieces. It is interesting to note that the reclassification of the Coprinus species (Parasola miser and Coprinellus pellucidus) has made this an intergeneric chimera, not that that matters to the fungi of course :smirk: Makes one wonder what kind of chimeras can be created. It also makes me wonder if some "hybrids" are really chimeras.

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the occurance of chimeric fruit bodies, but the Babasaki paper shows it very clearly, for Pholiota at least. I recommend reading it.

The Babasaki paper can be found here:

I'll see if I can get my hands on the Kemp reference (Coprinus chimera) later.

From "The species concept in hymenomycetes" (Kemp):

Chimaerae

During early studies on dung Coprini it sometimes proved difficult to distinguish between young specimens of C. miser and C. pellucidus. Some seemed to be intermediate between the two sections Nudi and Setulosi. Mycelia growing from sections of stipes sometimes had an outer zone of 5-7 mm which lacked clamps (= C. pellucidus) and an inner zone which was denser and had clamps (= C. miser). A detailed examination of the gills of some of the fruit bodies showed that they had tetrads of C. miser with lentiform spores and also tetrads of C. pellucidus with smaller narrow spores. The mycelia of these two species are clearly not antagonistic and they are able to share in the production of a fruit body. These fruit bodies were found on horse dung which had been collected in the wild and incubated in the laboratory. Efforts to produce fruit bodies of this type in culture were unsuccessful. Chimaera fruit bodies although not hybrids in the usual sense can show characters which are intermediate between two species. It is hoped that they are not too frequent as they are a taxonomists and geneticists nightmare.

Great post!  It leads to some interesting conclusions about cloning and isolation.

I tried a similar experiment with cubensis, but could not replicate their results. See http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13933757 (I wasn't sure whether to post here or in Mushroom Cultivation; moderators are free to move that thread if Advanced Mycology is more fitting)

I love to trade wedges. Currently looking for a nice  brick top and Pleurotus Eunosmus the Tarragon Oyster. I am also getting interested in the agaricus, so if you have a cool agaricus in good genetic condition PM me please

Sterility is a process that can be likened unto infinity, which is a long walk, the closer to the end you start before beginning, the more achievable  the goal of infinity becomes.  Remember, cleanliness in next to goddessness
