Humidifiers Heat Your House Cheaply!
    #13935835 - 02/09/11 06:50 PM (1 year, 3 months ago)

I learned the coolest thing I didn't ever know before.

Did you know that a humidifier can reduce your electric bill by 30% in the winter!?

This guy on the forum 3n1gm4 cut his electrical bill from 330 to 250 just by using a humidifier!
Quote:

3n1gm4 said:
If you raise your rooms humidity to at least 30% RH then it will hold the heat better and not require as much heating to keep it at 70/75F it will also lower your heating bill because humid air holds heat better than dry air.

Think about it if there are more water molecules in the air the molecules would be closer together therefore holding the heat produced by the heater better than spread out dry air. You can argue what they tought you at your job all day but it is just a way that they convince people to let them seal all the holes up and make money.

The truth is a humidifier will make your home hold it's temperature longer. It has nothing to do with turning the heat down because if I wasn't running the humidifier then the heater would be working just as hard to keep it at 70 as it was at 72. Fact: before humidifier heater rarely kicked off, ran almost constantly, after humidifier it only kicks on for 10 minutes or so every half an hour or so.

Ok look Do this experiment boil some water, pour equal amounts into same size glasses, put liberal amount of salt in one and mix till dissolved, see which one cools down quicker. The water without salt of course because there are more molecules closer together in the salt water, the same concept of having extra water molecules in the air the molecules are closer together so they hold on to heat better, C'mon man this is like middle school science class.

And to top it off, RR agrees.

Humid air holds heat far better than dry air because it has more mass.

So therefore proves that the mass of the water you are putting into the air is causing your home to maintain the warm air better and save you electric. Especially if your home is old and drafty and gets lots of fresh air:

Quote:

RogerRabbit said:
You shouldn't make a house air tight.  In fact, I keep windows open 1" even in January when it's -30F outdoors.  I don't wish to breathe the same air over and over again.  Indoor humidity in the winter should be maintained around 30% as already said, with fresh air supplied from outdoors.

I know it's counter intuitive that humidifying and heating the air and then letting it escape to the outside will save you money. But you have to understand the physics of mass and moisture and air temperature. Its better to just do it and let the forum physicists understand it for us. Ours is not to wonder why.

Yup... Humid air holds a lot of water.

Ever put a dehumidifier in a warm wet grow room during flower, it fills up quick.

This should be in the science and tech forum BTW, and don't get so butt hurt, next you will probably be arguing  :febreze: doesn't freshen fabrics. I have no scientific facts that back up what I have experienced but you don't have to throw a tantrum and start posting threads trying to make me and RR look bad. I was just telling you my situation, my house feels warmer in cold dry winters with a humidifier running and my humidifier ran out of water and it is starting to feel a bit nippy in here I will go fill it and put this childish nonsense behind me. If you are really being truthful then I am sorry for this post, but it just sounds like you are poking fun because you have been schooled and told different, so if you are trying to make me and RR look like idiots I suggest you keep it to yourself or at least post it in the right forum...

Some of the above is iffy though...

Humid air has less mass than dry air at the same temperature, because humid air has water molecules which displace air molecules and air molecules have greater mass than water vapor.  This means the same volume of moist air would have less mass then an equal volume of dry air.

I would venture that humid air is easier to heat because it has less mass to warm up than dry air, making your heater work less...

Dry air "holds" heat better as it would have more mass, but moist air is easier to heat and conducts heat better so it feels warmer.  This is why a 110 degree day in the high desert doesn't feel as hot as a 95 degree day in Houston with a high heat index.

I meant schooled in whatever air exchange science business that you are employed in, at an actual school or college. still that is no reason for you to lower my ratings just because you are mad. I was not rubbing it in I just thought you posted this because you wanted to make me and RR look like fools, you argued for days that we were wrong and then all of a sudden changed your mind and put up a post quoting us both... What was I supposed to think. Raise my rating back up and I will raise yours, either that or I will search for anything I can find and consult with all the admins about your behavior to get you permanently banned from this site because there is no sense in your childish actions. If you completely agree with me then WHY GIVE ME A BAD RATING! I did nothing to you but give my opinions until you started with this posting ridiculousness.

I deleted my negative rating for you because I will not sink to your level, ratings are meant for a purpose and it is not to get back at someone just because you have your panties in a knot.

This is just before anonjon told me that both I and RR were comlpetely stupid for thinking humid air would would help save money on your heating bill. Total jerk...
Quote:

anonjon said:
You know what, I was totally wrong man. Now that you put it that way it makes so much sense.

You're right. Everyone should humidify their house to cut down on their energy bills. Because the extra thermal mass of the water in the air energizes you through brownian motion. And since the humidifier is more electrically efficient than the furnace, it actually heats your house cheaper.

Thank you so much and I'm so sorry I misunderstood before. I'm such a dummy. Can you find it in your heart to forgive my ignorance? I can't believe I even had the nerve to challenge something RR said. I mean, that guy knows everything about everything. The mushrooms teach him stuff through his dreams.

If anyone reading this isn't already humidifying your house to over 50%, do it now. You'll save at least 80 dollars a month on your electric bill. You win. Game over.

All I said was since I run a humidifier I have saved money on heating costs, he works for a company that seals holes and puts in an expensive air exchange system so he went off when I said a humidifier made my house feel warmer. End of story I guess I will just have to deal with my not perfect rating because a complete lunatic wants to get revenge by leaving negative feedback and then agreeing with me in a fake post.

Water actually holds a ridiculous amount of BTUs per pound (900 something per pound per degree I think).
It takes a giant amount of heat to change states.

Fucking entropy. Screws up everything.

Flat points on a bell curve piss me off, even if they do reflect a change in state.
The holy grail of refrigeration is using water to run a fridge instead of fluorocarbons.

Anyway, I know all this but I still forgot I had a humidifier.

Thank you.
