I have posted this in the Pub already, but, in hindsight, I guess it might get more responses in here. If you didn't know it, you can buy a fuel cell for less than twenty dollars.
It also gives you a legal reason to own sodium borohydride, if you can figure out the formula the use inside the fuel cell. I bought one a long time ago, and another thread made me decide to go ahead and take some pictures for anyone that's curious.

Here is what you will find inside the black fuel cell case. You can't do any disassembling after this point, unless you break the fuel cell.

There are three pouches underneath which are punctured when you collapse the case of the fuel cell. I know for a fact water is inside one and a sodium borohydride paste inside the other. I wish I knew their formula for the sodium borohydride paste. I'm not sure what is inside the third one. Maybe it is where the waste products go after being used to make energy, but there is already a tiny bit of liquid in there, so I'm unsure.

A shot of the underside. If you look inside the "pouches" you can see a white thing inside each one. When you collapse the case, those puncture the "ceiling" of the pouch and release the chemicals into the fuel cell.

Bare with me; these are cell phone pictures. You can see the side profile of the puncture mechanism, it's just hinged at one side and has a tooth like point right over a hole, which is currently sealed off by the "pouch".
You can actually send these back to the company for recycling, and I think you might can get a coupon for when you purchase a new one. I haven't tested this, so I can't say how much power it produces or how long it lasts, but I know you can find that information online. It comes with a variety of adapters, so you can literally power anything.

I'm going to guess and say that the manufacture of that paste is not a DIY sort of deal. I wish it was.
