ID Request - Texas - Suspected Clitocybe nuda, ???, and Gymnopilus sp.
    #13845658 - 01/25/11 12:20 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

ALL:
Habitat: Quercus spp. and Pinus spp. habitat

#1:
Gills: Attached; pink to lavender.
Stem: White to lavender; sturdy; 1" in dia; no veil remnants observed.
Cap: White to lavender; smooth; not hygrophanous; 4-5 inches in dia.
Spore print color: Pale lavender.
Bruising: No color change was observed.

Growing from forest floor under leaf mulch. Mycelium attached to base was blue.

Suspect this is Clitocybe nuda.

#2:
Gills: Free; pink to white.
Stem: White; twisted, 1 cm in dia.
Cap: Brown; smooth; not hygrophanous; 3 in.
Spore print color: Dull rusty red-brown.
Bruising: No color change was observed.

#3:
Sorry for the lack of proper ID request on this one. I think they are Gymnopilus sp.

Younger specimens from different cluster than mature specimen, but I think both are the same. Both found on decomposing Quercus sp. Both have orange gills. Neither have a ring or any sort of evident veil remnant. Caps of younger specimens are very fragile. Cut stem of overly mature specimen revealed pale blue/green color.

All specimens printed a bright rusty orange color as pictured.

Why not Pluteus?

I'm not convinced that 1 is Lepista nuda. The gills looks wrong, the stem doesn't seem fibrous enough, I've never seen the cap go all wavy like that and the cap colour doesn't appear to've matured in the usual manner.

Was the spore print definitely lavender?

I guess it could be an atypical specimen but it doesn't look like any that I've found.

Yes pale blue to lavender spores with certainty.

I've held off on eating it because I'm not sure. I think the cap weirdness is due to environmental factors.  There was a more normal looking specimen nearby that I did not take. I see things like that with chanterelles quite often in that habitat. The color is a bit pronounced. I found several that I believe were also Clitocybe nuda which were much more tan and smaller with the same color spore print. Maybe when I go back out today I can get pics.

I think that's it--supposedly a very common mushroom around here.

Spore print looked a bit dark for Pluteus at first, but looking around I see "pinkish brown" descriptions.

naum - try n post up pics of the stem on the big mature "possible" gym bruising:thumbup::thumbup:
that one pic alone doesn't do good justice- sorry -
and the description of the little ones seems just slightly off when you said " they were fragile" - gyms are pretty tough - which is why its often hard to see evident bruising thru the tough yellow/orange flesh

the stems on the little ones - and the caps look off for gyms -

the big cap could be gym sp. - but more pics are def needed!!!!
specially pics of the bruising - thats KEY!!!!

Goodluck hunting man!!!! Glad the gyms seem to keep finding you!!!

elprawn:

This younger specimen was picked several days later from the exact same location (literally <1 inch from the previous stump):

Enough to convince you that's it's Clitocybe nuda now? :P

1. Lepista (Clitocybe) nuda
2. Pluteus cervinus
3. Gymnopilus sp. (possibly active if it is staining green/blue)
