It's good to be fluent in all of them. Depends on what needs to be done.
I love tech death, blends the best speed of death metal and melodies of prog.
Most of my song writing is influenced by it although a lot isn't typical metal.

edit: I didn't realize hybrid picking was picking with a pick and fingers. That's so cool. I always thought about playing like that but I never practiced it much. This opens up a whole new dimension

I would probably use an upstroke for that first 5->6 - but a hybrid picker for maximum efficiency would probably use a downstroke so that they can play the next 4 notes in one fluid stroke.

I do that too although my upstroke sweep is more fluid than the downstroke. Also, I tend to have less trouble counting and switching notes if I start my tremolo with an upstroke. I'll have to work on that.
