First Grow Journal [Lots of Pics]

January 9, 2011 Okay, so as of today I have everything I need. My spores came in promptly a week after purchase, but I found out the hardest thing to find on my list was vermiculite. I kid you not, it took me 5 stores to finally find a few bags. Sadly, although I haven't opened it, it feels like a very fine grade. I've heard this is frowned upon, but it's kinda hard to find it in the middle of winter. So, I plan on making and sterilizing the cakes tomorrow, so if someone could give me the worst case scenario on fine grade vermiculite it would be much appreciated.

December 31, 2010, Hello, and welcome to my very first grow journal. After a few years of semi-extensive research on this and many other sites on the web, for purely mycologist purposes. I will be doing this in an entry format, and plan to update the journal as often as events call. Through this thread I hope to contribute to the mass knowledge already on the internet, as well as get tips and pointers specific to my personal problems from this great community as I go through my first spore cycle. So, without further ado, lets start!
Stage: Pre-Inoculation
After doing some research on good spore suppliers, I went over to spores101 and bought three different strains to start my expedition.
The Gulf Coast, which is a personal favorite of mine
 The Golden Teacher
 Ecuador
I chose the last two because I've heard they are both good novice cultivator choices, and I'm hoping to have good results.
With my spores now on the way, I ran some errands and picked up some supplies today as well.
At WalMart I picked up 100.5Qt clear tub with detachable top ($14), as well as a cheap thermometer ($1), and a digital hygrometer ($8)

Sadly, WalMart in my area carried nothing else I needed, so I went to my local co op to pick up the OBRF ($8)

And I finished my day with a stop at my local true value. They only had 8qt bags of perlite, so I bought 2. I'm not sure if I'm going to have enough to fill my tub the few inches required, so I will probably be back there at some point. I also picked up 24 Kerr wide mouth 2 piece canning jars, and they are calling me when my vermiculite comes in. While I dont know individual prices per item, my wallet was $40 lighter when I left the store.

So, at the end of the day, my running total on the project is around $100. I forgot my spray bottle, distilled water, mineral water, and I'm still waiting on the vermiculite to come in. Besides these items though, I am ready to start making my rice cakes, and in case you were wondering, I don't plan to use a pressure cooker.
So thanks for reading so far! I'll probably update my journal again once I get the rest of my supplies or when the spores come in, but I will gladly be on everyday to respond to any inquiries. Thanks again!

The Brown Rice Flour does not have to be organic, Also tap water is more then fine no need to use distilled. You should get a refund on the digital hygrometer, and get a analogue one that you can calibrate yourself by wrapping it in a wet towel for 1 hour then manually set to 100%.
Take a look at this for cakes

They are not a shroomery sponsor nor a reliable vendor, I hate to say it but research would have warned you against this.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't see any analogue hygrometers at WalMart, and I guess i'll just hope the spores show up. If not, then I'll get my money back and go with one of the site's sponsors.

ive never found a hygrometer to be all that essential to the process.
unless you're not following a tek and making your own fruiting chamber.
or dialing in a humidity tent.

On the Verm you said you got fine, and thought it may have been bad but i hear that most people like to use fine. Because the dry layer on the top acts as a filter the smaller the verm the more filtration? I dunno just heard that some where cant remember... I just started my first grow too and so far mine was about the same price but had some stuff laying around the home. I actually bought a pressure cooker cause there was one on sale for 50 bucks and the original price was 120.
How are you going to sterilize your cakes?
You should take a pic of the singes up close I hear spores 101 isnt the best place to get them. I made the mistake of using some i had gotten from little shop of spores that barely had any if no spores in them honestly it was a dumb mistake and i should have realized there weren't any spores in it. I guess I was in denial haha

I ordered my spores from spores101 as well. Although they did have spores in it and did inoculate 10 jars. The growth is quite slow which leads me to believe that the spore to water ratio was very low.

I watched a youtube video on the pf tek ( and i guess as long as the water is boiling for about 90 minutes, and the cans are off the bottom I should be good, granted im going to have to refill the water. As for the close ups of the spores, I'll post plenty tomorrow with every step that I take. While I'm hoping for the best results, I do realize this is my first grow and that something is bound to go wrong, but I want to make sure I document everything so that I can know what to change next time. The water basically looks clear, but I'm hoping they dont take to long to colonize.

Nice yea I got RR's video set too, it helped a lot and you should be okay with out a pressure cooker.
Great idea though to document every thing your doing, the two things I did wrong my first grow where inoculating the jars while they where still warm and i forgot the sterilize the needle between jars.
Hope all goes well

you shouldn't have to refill or add water during the 90 minutes.
First turn the burner up to bring it to a boil, then you want to turn it down to the lowest setting that will still keep a steady boil.
Use to layers of lids like they do in the video and the amount of water to the top rim is perfect, I always have like half the water at least left. (my pot fits 8 jars with none stacked)
