Couple questions about home wiring
    #13699768 - 12/29/10 08:27 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Anybody know about home electrical wiring?

1) I want more outlets in my kitchen- is it legal/code compliant to add more?
I'm not going to use them all at once, I just want to keep things plugged in.

2) I want to put a light in a closet
Not grow lights, just a light with a switch. And an outlet, while I'm there.
Best way to put the wiring through the walls?
I'm thinking that putting it up through the ceiling is the simplest method.

Any input appreciated.

pick up a basic home wiring book, or find  a page online with pictures, there is too much to explian in a post of things you should be aware of, like how much load is already on the line you want to add from. Placement of switches,Current on that circut, and what not..It is not hard to do at all, but pictures in a step by step guide are worth a 1000 words written here. good luck, be safe.

I'm not concerned about the load.
I'm not going to use the toaster oven while the microwave and coffee pot and blender are on.
I just want them all plugged in at the same time.

What I want to know is whether that's legal and code compliant- to add outlets.
If you don't know, that's fine, but then don't waste everybody's time telling me to read a book.

I mean, I could call the county permit people if needed.
I just thought there might be somebody here who knows.

Completely unrelated, somewhat rhetorical question:

Why is shower plumbing always sealed up inside the walls?
Sink plumbing isn't. Dishwasher plumbing isn't.
But everywhere I ever lived, working on the shower meant breaking into drywall.

In most counties in the states it is required that you have a permit for wiring, some are more strict than others, and require that a licensed electrician do the work.
Even if you are able to do the grunt work, the permit allows them to come make sure it is safe.

In any event for what you are talking about, you WILL have to know the load for that permit..

Guess you should make those calls and read a book. stop wasting everyones time and do the leg work yourself.......

That's a useful answer, thanks.

I have a book.
It shows the wiring with the drywall off the wall, which doesn't really help me.
I know how to assemble the stuff, just wasn't sure on the actual methodology of routing the wires for question 2.
I'll check with the permit people about #1.

(There's a GFCI on the line, that may cause me issues. Might be better to extend a line from a different room.)

Any comment on the plumbing question?
Anything at all from adding a half-height nozzle to a simple washer replacement is a huge PITA.
any idea why there's not a little access panel on the other side?

Edit- there's a 40-amp breaker on the line, I have an electric stove.
If I can swap that out for gas someday, I'll have more capacity than I'd ever need.
But honestly, I'm not going to run everything at once, I just like to leave it all plugged in.
Short-term I can use one of the six-way expanders, but adding outlets would be prettier.

Everywhere you lived, the builder was too lazy to install an access panel in the wall.

I would familiarize yourself with the specific local kitchen wiring codes and the current NEC if you are going to attempt to add a circuit or extend one in your kitchen, if not for safety then for insurance purposes.  I'm pretty sure a lot of places have rules about dedicated circuits for fridges/microwaves, and also GFCI's around sinks and the like.  If it were me, I'd just run an extra 20 amp circuit from the panel if it's easy to access and you should be able to do a decent job if it's just drywall you're dealing with.  Nothing a fish tape and some old work boxes can't solve.

Insurance and reselling are both important to me, that's why I'm asking.

Adding a whole new line from the box really does sound like a good idea.

Hey, is there any issue with moving an existing switch?
Every light switch in my home is on the left as you enter- except one.
I'd like to move it to the correct spot, assuming there's no obstacle.

Assuming I use the right wire and assemble it all correctly, are there legal issues with that?

Probably, maybe, depends on the codes where you live.  Some places are very strict requiring any and all electrical work be done by a licensed electrician.  Other places only require permits and inspections to any changes made.  Other places might not care at all.  You really need to look at your local codes to know what you can or cannot (legally) do.

One thing to keep in mind, any work you do yourself gives the insurance company an excuse to deny coverage should something bad happen, even if the something bad is unrelated to your work.

that's what I'm doing but mine will involve a little more work, a 550'
trench that's 4 feet deep, 2 gauge quadruplex cable just for a measly 100
amp circuit which is the limit that I can run without worrying about an
inspection and permits

3" PVC conduit or are you just going to direct bury?

I think that wire is burial grade.

BTW, are you adding a subpanel to an addition or barn or something?

it's direct burial and yes, a 100 amp breaker panel and I already have the
barn wired for 115v, I still have to set up a couple of 240v circuits and
run everything into the box

unfortunately I have to do an underground splice to get my extra 50 feet,
I'd have gotten a 1000' roll for the $300 extra ($1200) but it would have
to be trucked here which adds shipping and since this isnt a commercial
site they want to toss in an extra $200 for delivery even though the
driver wouldnt have to touch a thing, tractor lifts 400lbs with ease, that
brings me to a grand total of double the price and I'd have 450 feet I'd
have to get rid of at a discount

As long as you have to do a splice anyway, put in a fountain or a floodlight or something.

you want me to install more maintenance headaches?

I have a HPS light for night lighting and 2 retarded fountains that never get used

I have a couple of additional breakers installed so I can hook up the pool pump and filter this summer

Electrical codes are not just for your protection or lifestyle.  Someday somebody else is going to live in that house.  How will they know that they can't run all that shit at once?  A lot of the jobs I do have a dedicated circuit just for the microwave.

I've been a contractor for 25 years.  I would not for one second consider adding a fixture or an outlet in someone else's house myself.  Bad electrical work kills people.

The reason shower plumbing is hidden is appearance and water penetration into wall cavities.  Typically in a sink application you don't have some asshole spraying water all over the surrounding area and the plumbing is in a cabinet anyway.

> Bad electrical work kills people.

I've seen a lot of really bad electrical work around here.  Every two-bit illiterate day worker thinks he can do house wiring.  The worst I've seen happened when the "contractor" didn't bother to run neutral lines back to the breaker box (on the single phase circuits).  I guess he assumed that a ground and hot are good enough.  Everything would work mostly fine until the house load got too high and then the voltages would start to swing up around 180V (rather than 110V) and all the electronics in the house would smoke.  My jaw dropped when I opened the breaker panel and saw a nicely grounded neutral bus bar with no white wires to be seen anywhere.  Started to pull out plugs from the wall and sure enough, every single one had a black and a green with no white to be seen. Needless to say, that was an expensive fix.

1. It is legal  to put more outlets. However in a kitchen  if they are serving as counter top receptacles they need to be GFCI protected on account of  NEC 210.8(A)(6)

2. easiest way to do that is with fish tape maybe feeding it off of another source suck as an outlet. However in closet storage space under NEC code 410.16 (a) the following luminares ARE permitted a surface mounted or recessed incandescent luminare WITH an enclose lamp, a surface or recessed mounted fluorescent luminare or surface mounted fluorescent or LED luminare labeled as being safe for clothes storage spaces.

oh yeah and you can get boxes with flanges on them so you dont have to nail them to the stud, and no stapling necessary if its a modification

ID still hire a professional house fires can kill!

hope this helped

Not me, but I used to be a member of IEEE.  Does that count?
