Woodworking on a budget
    #13365662 - 10/21/10 11:03 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Say you want to get into woodworking. Building some basic things like a bookcase or some tables etc...

What would be the essential tools you'd need? Preferably hand tools since I don't have a lot of €€€ to spend.

That's easy. A good coping saw for small fine cuts, a medium sized hand saw for cutting wood, a hammer, small nails, Elmer's wood glue, sand paper from 80 grit on up to 1200 grit (multi packs work great), and a measuring tape should about do it. Obviously you need a good stain and finish for the top coat too.

I'm sure I'm missing something here, but that should get you started.

buy a table saw before you do anything. And next save and buy a good belt sander.

Table saws are pretty expensive. I'm going to have a look to see whether I can afford to get something second hand but I don't think it'll be within my budget.

I know getting a table saw will save me a lot of work but I think I should be able to manage for now with a hand saw.

Any other tools that might be really useful when starting off? Do you think I'd need one of those angle things? And what about chisels?

Oops, I forgot about a speed square. That's the angle thing you're referring to. Chisels could be useful, but I rarely use them unless I'm making doors.

What is a woodworker's bible?

Like, a good book for reference and learning?

I ordered The complete manual of woodworking by Albert Jackson and David Day.

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Manual-Woodworking-Albert-Jackson/dp/0679766111/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291163926&sr=8-1

Is it any good or I should return it right away?

Anybody know?  Please inform me of a better pick.

Thanks much,

Tri

Again, I say:

chisels
planes
spokeshave
sandpaper
hand drill??

A table saw and drill press are nice to have.  I don't use routers too much, but I could see why they're awfully handy!

Dictyophora indusiata;
According to a 2001 publication in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, the smell of the fresh fungus can trigger spontaneous orgasms in human females. In the trial involving 16 women, 6 had orgasms while smelling the fruit body, and the other ten, who received smaller doses, experienced physiological changes such as increased heart rate.

you can buy a decent small drill press for less than the price of a decent drill

I move for accuracy, versatility and functionality

OP:  you should keep a detailed log via this thread (or a similar new one) about your progression towards your woodworkin ggoals.  As soon as I get an applicable living space i'll be getting into the hobby as well (girl wants to take up pottery).

I want to see whatchya got.

And, as always, check Craigslist.
