Will wearing this suit to court help or harm my case?
    #13605501 - 12/09/10 05:57 AM (1 year, 5 months ago)

I confessed to doing graffiti crime.

I think some of the possible impressions this suit could make are:

"this guy is not a REAL criminal! He's a fun loving adolescent with a nifty paisley suit!"

"I, the judge, being a babyboomer and all, have great admiration for the sympathy expressed towards sixties counter culture by this purple suit. Therefore, my verdict will be sympathetic!"

"When I got up this morning, I was super serious and not amused at all. Now, seeing a defendant wearing a purple paisley suit to court, my heart has melted! I have rarely been this endeared! My verdict will be sympathetic!"

OR!

"What is this?! Does this FOOL not respect the justice system?! I am disgusted! I am making an example of this good for nothing! I SENTENCE YOU TO 8 YEARS IN STATE PRISON WITH NO CHANCE ON PAROLE!!!"

Depends on if the judge took a dose that morning.

Since you can probably guess the answer to that - you can probably guess the answer to your original question

I think the amount of fines you're going to get, and the potential for jail time will be much more humorous than the suit.

No but you see, if someone is convicted for graffiti crime, the judge is going to expect some dickhead with a hoodie in court I would imagine. Perhaps if I can make it come off as though it was an impulsive thing, they'll go a little easier on me.

Is this how the judicial system works anyway, does the emotional opinion of the judge make any difference?

It shouldn't, that's why he's the judge.

And he's probably going to interpret anything you try to do as being contrived anyway, he  sees the shit all day long.

And instead of a dickhead wearing a hoodie, he'll see a snide, pompous ass wearing a purple paisley suit for the lulz.

Kidding aside, the emotional opinion definitely plays a role.  If you're serious, that suit is not the emotional tone you want to present in a court of law.  Especially when semi serious charegs are being considered.

What about going naked and having FREE ASSANGE written on my bare body?

Another option could be to go dressed as a rhubarb. This way perhaps they will think they have made a mistake in assuming I am of human heritage. In this case I would be trialed under herbaceous law, which is a lot more lenient.

I see, but not wearing a costume that helps my case would make me feel very uncomforable. Perhaps wearing my fathers suit would help? I would look incredibily endearing wearing a suit that's too big for me.

Please tell me you are joking?

Having read the threads you've posted it seems like you genuinely are not kidding, so here's a little advice:

Wear a typical, business "casual" suit; navy blue/black pants, a white shirt, a navy blue/black blazer (depending on the pants), and definitely add a tie -  a simple blue or red patterned tie.  You do not want your attire to draw any attention to you, except for the kind that makes someone feel a little bad for the (apparently) otherwise decent, upstanding young man at the defense table.  You want to dress in a way that shows respect for the court and for the presiding judge, whether or not you actually have any respect for the law.  You want to appear contrite, self-deprecating, humble, and remorseful.

It surprises me how many people don't realize how much of a difference your dress and demeanor can make in court.  If you can pull off making the judge think that you 1) respect the authority of the court, 2) got caught up in doing something you now realize was wrong, and feel awful about it, and 3) feel so ashamed about your  behavior that you surely will never come before the court again for any reason (save maybe a traffic ticket) - then you're well on your way to making things a lot better for yourself.

I hesitated in giving this advice since, from what I've read, it really sounds like they should throw the book at you.  That said, you're a fellow shroomery member and I would feel bad if I didn't give some advice and your life ended up ruined.

If I didn't already make it clear: whatever you do, don't wear that jacket/blazer.  Don't wear something ill-fitting, either.  You want to look clean and like you made sure to dress appropriately for the occasion.  If this means you need to go out and buy a suit, I'd say you should do it: the money you will likely save in court will likely be a lot more than the cost of a suit.

Edit: Oh, and don't wear your suit with a pair of sneakers - definitely wear a pair of brown or black leather dress shoes (preferably black, IMO).  Wear black socks with your shoes.  Don't forget to shower and show up sporting a clean shave.  Plan on appearing as humble and contrite as possible - you don't want to be giving any speeches.  "Yes, your honor" and "No, your honor" , if they  are the only two phrases you have to say, will be a good thing.  Basically, they are right and you are wrong - no matter how you actually feel, that is how you need to approach the courtroom experience (at least in the kind of situation you are in.  A murder trial would be a bit of a different situation, obviously).
