i know this probably belongs in the mussic forum but theres fuck all people there and u get fuck all replys.
question: who is the greatest guitarist ever and why? maybe name a few songs with great riffs or solos or state how they made an impact on the msic industry.

In my opinion its Jimi Hendrix, although Im sure plenty will disagree.

i dont really have 1 pick. however jimi hendrix certianly is 1 of the greatest i have seen. that bloke is magic on the guitar and very big during 1 of the most influential eras of music history.

I have to:
Second place goes to the one and only Elliott Smith (Favorite Artist of all time. Hendrix is still a better guitarist though, as much as it pains me to admit it.)

Yeah, Derek Trucks is a groovy cat. I don't know if he's better than Duane Allman though. I'm sure he'll be one day, but I don't think he is yet.

IMO There are and were many great ones.. some faster or some more sophisticated... but hands down, nobody can match or hold the torch to David Gilmour "Pink Floyd"
(I would have gladly given a kidney to have been there ^^^)

why? I actually vastly prefer Syd Barrett as a guitarist, and he's not one of the more technical players
there is definitely no greatest, but among some of my top choices are Jimi Hendrix, Paco de Lucia, Django Reinhardt...there's more but that's what's at the top of my head

How is there even discussion? Jimi Hendrix takes the cake... no one even comes close.
Django Reinhardt was pretty fucking epic though, quite ahead of his time.

Don't get me wrong, Syd was great too... but he was no David Gilmour. IMO David Gilmour was the best thing for the band.
Mark Knopfler is definitely #2 In my book
