freeze 'comin, ok to harvest cyan pins?
    #13518564 - 11/21/10 09:06 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

The patch I've been harvesting from this year only has some pins and a few not quite mature cyans in it right now.  Temps went below freezing last night and snow/ice is on the way.

Is it ok/worthwhile to harvest the little guys before they get destroyed by the frost?  How will that affect potency?

My main concern is the long-term viability of the patch.  If harvesting pins before a freeze might slow down the growth/expanse of this patch for next year then I won't touch it.  But if they're just going to waste...

I think if they are cyans, they are tough little suckers, they will probably be none the worse for wear!

Just leave the little ones to make sure the cycle continues! More food for the mycelium next year!

well definetly lower you standards but i would cover up the pins with as much leaves as you can. this cold snap wont last forever. maybe they will continue to grow. and having them rott away to nothing isnt bad either.

I have found that once we have a deep freeze like we are going to have, once the temps pick back up, the cyan pins will not grow anymore, they just turn really really blue.  This being said, they will never get the chance to mature and drop spores.  So I say go pick them as they don't have a chance to expand the patch anyways
