So... today I'm giving a persuasive speech.
I decided to go with the topic of "Eat More Mushrooms." I'm not sure if you guys remember your public speaking classes but I have to meet a bunch of requirements for the speech.
I need; An attention getter. Opposition's main arguments refuted? A call to action. Some main points and sources if you've got em. Ideas for visual aids?
----- These are my objectives;
Objective: To persuade Specific purpose: To persuade the audience to eat more mushrooms Central Idea: Mushrooms are nutritious and sometimes even medicinal.
-----
Any help would be great here guys.

Drop interesting facts and statistics about fungi, and be sure to include some jokes as well.
Where do old mushroom jokes go to die?

I guess I should of made it clear that I'm not talking about silly shrooms, lol.
As much as I'd like to... it's not that kind of atmosphere.
I intend to drop some good facts about them but that's not a bad idea about opening with a joke.
The teacher is kind of deadset on the first sentence being something super interesting.

Well the whole issue of magic mushrooms is a pretty controversial one and likely to grab some attention.

I think if you went infront of your audience and just deadpanned "Eat more mushrooms" that'd definitely lock eyes on you

Fuck I hate that class. My speech went ok but I ended up reading most of it off of the outline I wrote. Also some chick haaaad to ask what the exact chemical in Red Reishi is that makes you feel sleepy. I could tell em how it helps with blood pressure etc but forgot that one thing. Doh!
Thanks for the ideas though guys
Incase you guys wanted to read it;
I. Introduction A. Attention Getter : One cup of fresh cooked pasta contains between 175-212 calories. An average cup of ground beef contains approximately 335 calories. Did you know that an entire cup of mushrooms contains only 18 calories?
B. Problem Introduced/Central Idea Statement : Typically Americans percieve mushrooms as having little nutritional value however this is far from true.
C. Significance of Problem Established : Most people are familiar with medical issues such as cancer, heart disease, obesity and high cholesterol. Including mushrooms as an essential ingredient in your diet can help prevent all of these.
D. Relate to the Audience : Even if you're not a mushroom enthusiast, I'm sure you are all familiar with the common grocery store variety of mushrooms such as white button mushrooms, Portobello caps and possibly even Cremini a brown variety of the common button mushroom.
E. Credibility Statement : I've been a mushroom enthusiast for about four years now and during those years I've followed the works of hundreds of credible mycologists, medical students and private researchers. One mushroom for which I can testify in particular is Ganoderma lucidium also known as Red Reishi. One cup of a tea brewed with this mushroom can be considered equivalent to one over-the-counter sleep aid.
F. Preview of both Problem and Solution : Americans suffer from many ailments which correlate directly with their diet. Many of these issues can be prevented by encompassing mushrooms into your daily diet.
Transition into problem: I feel that the problem here is one which everyone is familiar with. Almost every newspaper has a "Health" section where these issues are brought to light daily. However lets review a few of the issues;
II. Body A. Main Idea (Problem): Americans are suffering many illnesses which are in large part due to their diet. This inclues hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol and cancer. i. Supporting Material: As we get older we become more prone to developing certain diet-related illnesses such as hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, cancer, and/or osteoporosis. (http://www.four-h.purdue.edu) ii. Supporting Material: According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a person's diet can greatly affect their health. iii. Supporting Material: According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, obesity occurs over time when you take in more calories than you use.
Internal Summary/Internally Preview Transition: Now that you understand the problem, I would like to go into possible solutions for the problem.
B. Main Idea (Solution): Mushrooms provide a versatile and effective solution for diet-related illnesses. i. Supporting Material: One cup of mushrooms contains only 18 calories. (5 foods that should have a place in your diet) ii. Supporting Material: Most mushrooms contain polysaccharides which bolster the immune system. In some cases, the boost is great enough to stop breast tumor formation as well as end the proliferation of prostate-cancer cells. (The Health Benefits Of Medicinal Mushrooms, Stengler) iii. Supporting Material: Mushrooms contain high amounts of disease fighting anti-oxidants which reduce the risk of heart disease. They also contain high amounts of potassium which reduces high blood pressure and stroke. (How Mushrooms Help Fight Heart Disease) iiii. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign tested six different mushroom species, both raw and cooked, and found that they were all rich in total dietary fibers including chitin which lowers cholesterol and beta-gluten which promotes heart health.
Transition into conclusion: Now you have a clear idea that mushrooms can help support a more healthy diet.
III. Conclusion A. Recap Problem and Solution: There are many problems presented by a person's diet and many of them can be solved by simply eating more mushrooms.
B. Relate back to the Introduction / Central Idea / Importance: I like to say that mushrooms are 90% water and 10% healthy. This allows them to be low in calories as well as full of nutritional value.
C. Clear Final Action Plan for Audience: Next time you visit the grocery store do your body a favor and try a new recipe with mushrooms as the center point.
D. Impact Statement for Strong Closing: By including mushrooms in your diet you can not only make delicious meals but ones that support a healthy lifestyle for you and your family.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I just got out of that class and the persuasive speech was by far the biggest pain in the ass. Mushrooms are always a cool topic
