I started a SOBO trek this past july, but illness forced me off the trail :sad:

I plan on attempting another thru-hike in the future, but I don't know when.

SOBO = southbound
NOBO = northbound

it just means which direction you travel, (Maine to Georgia, vs Georgia to Maine).  Statistically, only about 10% of thru-hikers attempt a SOBO trek, but I have no idea why.

I'm planning on catching the amtrak to Harpers Ferry next April and section hiking down to Springer in GA. I'd love to do the three long trails: the pacific crest, the continental divide, and the appalachian trail. I've read that the AT is the easiest to hike because you can usually resupply every 2-3 days if necessary.

If you have a good family member, you can have them strategically mail supplies on your journey :smile:
Best of luck to all of you!

I think the reason most people go nobo has something to do with the weather.  so you're not going through the south in july and august

Yeah a lot has to do with the weather... plus starting in Maine in early spring would SUCK. Its fucking cold.
SOBOs generally get the worst weather - snowy/freezing condition at the start of their trip in maine (unless you start later in the season...) and then BLAZING HOT when you get down south in late summer/fall

That plus it's generally considered that NOBO has better scenery/progression.
You start off in the georgia hills in spring and slowly make your way north... Finally ending at Mt Katahdin in Maine by late summer/fall ish.. the terrain just gets more and more rugged the further north you get especially the final stretch.... you climb to the summit and that is supposed to be your reward for just hiking like 2000 miles.
It's a little anti-climatic, when you start at the peak of katahdin and end your journey in the rolling foothills of georgia. You get most of the hard stuff out of the way early in the hike.
And only like 5-10% of thru-hikers go SOBO, so you'll have way less hiking partners along the way... but you'll pass a lot of people going the other way :yesnod:

I've never hiked the whole trail simply due to time/resources. I would definitely like to at some point.
I believe Shroomery member Adom? hiked 90% of it a few years back but had to quit due to injuries. Although if I recall I think he went back to section hike the rest.
If I remember though, he was making amazing time. I think he was pushing like 20-25 miles a day on average. If you do some digging I'm sure you can find the thread.

It's also interesting.. you can see his gear list progress through the hike.
At the beginning of his trip his base pack weight was 45-50 lbs..... by about halfway through he had cut his base pack weight down to about 13lbs.
THRU-HIKING, is one application where going as lightweight as possible (without sacrificing the necessities) is your best friend.

this cannot be stressed enough!  those threads were a good read too, and highlight the all too important need to either plan your diet thoroughly (even taking supplements).  I think my lack of certain vitamins left me more susceptible to the parasites that brought my trip to an end.

That's what I'm hoping. I want the solitude but I don't have the resources or experience to do a more hardy trail like the PCT or the CDT yet. I live in Florida so hiking in the heat is no great strain. The trick is staying hydrated and not hiking during the hottest part of the day.
My biggest concern is water. You need like a gallon a day when hiking in the mountains or the summer. That's a lot of weight. I've read that some southern sections in Virginia have poor to no water availability so this could be a factor, meaning when I do find water I'll have to stock up. My problem is the weight. I can't carry too much weight because I have neck problems from a car accident. I have to go as ultralight as my meager budget will afford.
I kind of look at it as a coming-of-age-hermitage-pilgrimage-adventure. It's pretty much all I've been thinking about.
