I think that could explain why they aren't interfering with the advancement of our civilization. It doesn't really explain why they won't officially make contact. There's been plenty of interactions between humans and UFOs. It's not like they are trying to hide from us. They're more than willing to interact with us but a lot of these interactions seem to involve some level of hostility.

I worked at my local humane society for a while. I had to force dogs around into various cages during the deep cleaning process (can't spray bleach while the dogs are hanging around). They probably didn't like the whole situation of having to sleep around their own shit, and wondered why I couldn't take them somewhere nicer. From my more intelligent (?) perspective, this was all for their own good. As was euthanizing certain animals...
None of this was pleasant for the animals, or me. But it was the best we humans could give them.
Perhaps if aliens are among us, they are already doing the best they can for us, given the circumstances? I mean, any kind of speculation in this area is probably so far off from reality. We are dumb, mostly planet-bound apes.
Perhaps they can't even communicate with us? In the same way that I can't talk to a dog, even though I have more intelligence than he does.

I've thought about this too.
I mean think about. If you are a peaceful species capable of some type of light-speed or wormhole travel, what would you think of Earth? We have an economy built on production and greed, we spend most of our free time with our various addictions, possess weapons of mass destruction, wage wars, etc etc. I think it is very likely such species would be apprehensive to make contact. It makes sense that they are waiting for us - to see if we can get our shit together.

But lets take Oddworld for an example, the rulers obviously DID NOT have the people's best interest in mind.

heh...true...
perhaps the human race is actually in a situation more like...this?

We're digging up our ancestor's bones to make brew, and we don't even realize it.
