Slow growing Sceletium tortuosum
    #12910710 - 07/17/10 10:15 AM (2 years, 9 months ago)

This plant has been quite slow to germinate and keeps slow pace in groing too. Of the 12 seeds I sowed in this pot, apparently only one made it...

yep starting out can take some time with them.  Once they are a few years old they get huge fast though.

Yes, mine is about a year old now and only a cluster about the size of 2 bic lighters stacked up.

Oh I see. I sowed a lot of it in different places, but the fastest to germinate and grow was the one depicted here - the only one that lives outdoors. Seeds in a propagator aren't doing any better.

Seeds germinate when the chemicals that inhibit germination get washed out. That results in seedlings coming up at different times, I sprayed mine alot with water and it seemed like the more I sprayed, the more germinated. Mine grow too fast, I have to throw big stacks of it away, its a weed if you let it get that way. Mine are both inside and outside in sunny locations and well draining soil but watered moderately. If the seeds are viable...Which they appear to be then it will just take time for the others to germinate. Never fear!, mine took 6 weeks before they stopped popping up. Good luck!

This one seems to have died: it's shrivelled badly and reduced to a bare greenish spot. I wonder what happened. I hope other seeds pop out from the same pot, but since so much time has passed, I highly doubt it :frown:

Sorry about your plant death, Sceletium tortuosum can be difficult to grow from seed depending on the conditions.  I have three Sceletium tortuosum plants about three inches tall, and have experienced some problems similar to yours of shriveling and dieing.  I have found that these plants don't like direct summer sun and high humidity, tending to go dormant in the hot summer months.  They should be kept shaded during this period, and they do most of their growing during the cooler months.  What conditions did you have your seedlings in??

It was kept in partial shade, getting very little direct sunlight (the pot is sitting in the lowest tier of an outdoor shelf). Watered sparingly, although it got a few drops almost every day as the water given to nearby pots occasionally sprinkled around.
As for atmospheric humidity, it's plenty here - it can't be helped.

Your problem is probably lack of water.  Sceletiums like quite a bit of water even when they're more mature.  I haven't ever let my seedlings dry out yet.  Also, I have read that Sceletium seeds may germinate better after they've aged.  I sowed some ~2-3 year old seeds this season and got great germination.

Given the shady position and the almost-daily sprinkling, the soil was (is!) always a little moist. However, lack of water might be the culprit, since on of the batch of seeds in the germinator sprouted at least minimally (something like 7-8% germination). Another batch in the same germinator still shows no signs after over 1 month.

Do you think the seeds in that pot might age underground and give me some pretty surprise in a few years?

UPDATE:
I got one surprise: a new seedling in this outdoor pot! However I'm afraid it will end up like its older brother.

I have some indoor (germinator) sprouted seeds which are doing less than exceptionally. You can read about them here. If anyone has more experience to share, it would be very well accepted.

Here's the new outdoor seedling - looking much like the first one. I'm going to try to get at least this one right, but it's hard to learn from one's error when there are new factors from the upcoming seasonal change to take into account...

I have 2 growing right now out of like a dozen seeds. I Started them at the beginning of the summer and their still really small but still growing.  When I Germinated my seeds I dumped all the seeds into a shot glass and filled it with water and then let them germinate under water. As soon as I saw a root start to pop out of a seed I pulled the seed out of the water. I did this with each seed as they germinated also changed the water a few times. I think it took almost 2 weeks with the seeds underwater the entire time for them to start germinating.

Nice tip for germination. Would it make sense to try germinating some in the (relatively) colder season?

The outdoor seedling is still there, still true to the latest pic.

As for the indoor seedlings, I tried to do something about them, but it doesn't seem to work out. Back to the drawing board... :frown:
