Moonshine Tek part 2 3

After 6 days the mash was finished fermenting. With the airlock CO2 breather, its easy to tell when its done, it simply stops bubbling.
*Pour the mash into the pressure cooker
*Then assemble the still....join the pressure cooker with the condenser coil (i used a brewers cork) you can get that at any brewing supply store....bring it home and drill the hole yourself to fit your pc.
*At this point you should already have your condenser coil in your bucket....fill the bucket with 2 regular size bags of ice....
*Next Step...Distilling...... Heres a crash course in distilling 101... The first stuff that comes out is called the forshots..or heads. This is where all the nasty stuff and methanol are. For this size mash the first 125 ml that we draw, will be considered the head.
This usually comes out at around 175 degrees....I've noticed the last few times that there's initially a real fast drip. Now you wanna try and hover around 185 degrees. So to do this, when you turn the stove on, put it on medium. Its gonna take a lil bit for it to warm up. When it hits about 170, I back the heat off a little and babysit it. It's gonna climb back up to aprox 185...and the drip will slow down and even out. Now this is the body...you collect this and sample it about every 8 ounces....taste it, smell it...because as the temp rises that smell and taste will change and you will notice it. This is when you determine when you're gonna make your cuts to tails. You'll start getting a faster drip and your temp will rise once it starts breaking past 190-195, you're definitely on the tail end. The other thing you can do as you're collecting the shine in 8 oz incriments, is use an alcohol hydrometer to determine proof. ~you can get this at the brew store as well. You can get the plastic one that looks like an old school thermometer for around 5 bucks. Just dip it in there and it will give you a reading! Most people use this so they can dilute the moonshine with spring water, to bring it down to 80 proof. It will be obvious with the hydrometer when you're in your tails, cuz you'll have a lot lower proof, most folks stop with around 40....The tails can be collected and reused in the second wash....if u decide to redistill. *REMEMBER TO ALWAYS THROW OUT YOUR FIRST 125 ML* This is way more than recommended but we wanna be safe.... *In this pic, u notice the half pint jar has the first 125 ml (the heads), The quart jar has the body (for drinking)....and the pint under the still is still the body.
Remember this is a real long process so be patient! you collect a drip at a time!! *Heres a pic of a plate with just a small amount of the shine that i sat fire to. This is how the oldtimers determined when it was ready....
~I'm sure I left some things out....feel free to ask questions!

I've been planning to do this for a couple years now, haven't made it around to it, but seeing how you did it has inspired me. I'm going to bookmark this right now.
Thanks!

You should make a single continuous thread with updates and pictures. It would be easier to follow and I'd like to follow this. Nice work.

Is it really worth distilling? I would almost rather just make gallons and gallons of 14%abv brew.
Also when I brew, I let my wort sit for a good three weeks before done; and my yeast goes for at least two weeks.

Sounds awesome. I've got a bookmark in the first part and this one but you could always put these pictures there or however.

i hear ya man....distilling is a lot of work! compared to what you get in returns, it's pretty minuscule. I just do it for the fun of being able to do it and because it reminds my girl of being back home!

I've gotten some good "white lightnin'" when I first moved to Ohio at a weekend camper of my sisters. The only way in state to get everclear is to know someone who can purchase at the AF base PX.

What you use for the mash and making the coil? looks like 3/8" copper, and do you need a electric stove? Seems a little dangerous so close to flame burner.

the mash is cornmeal, sugar, yeast, and distilled water....all of the exact measurments are in part 1 of this tek....the condenser coil is 1/4 inch...as far as electric stove goes: its easier to control ur heat with an electric stove...but a gas stove is ok too....hell back in the old days they did it over open flame lol!

It came out at 120 proof which is good for such a basic still. I have another batch needs to be cooked on friday, makes for an intersting weekend.

Do you just distill again to get higher proof or does a better still actually influence the proof?
