Has anyone contacted Mr Barnard? If so, what do you think about his project ?

Sorry to resurrect an old topic but it's certainly relevant to this thread (I used the search function and found this to be the most recent mention of an endeavor to automate a terrarium) - a friend of mine and I are currently working on a fully(ish) automated terrarium and will be posting a detailed account of the build. Originally we intended to make a simple step-by-step tek, but because I'm a bit strange, the writeup has taken on a mind of it's own and more closely resembles a university thesis than anything else. My sincerest apologies if it's too long and dry, but based upon the reactions to people who are less interested in the science than in getting high that I've seen in the past few weeks of lurking here I suspect (and hope) that there will be a mostly positive reception. One of the requirements is that the entire build be open-source, so hopefully some of you will derive some benefit from the detail we'll be including.
At any rate - since this is one of my first posts here, I'll go ahead and make mention of what a valuable resource this site/community has been in researching the basic requirements for growing/cultivation of fungi. Thank you all for your collective input.
Back on point: you all can expect to see some progress from my corner in the coming weeks. Thank you again.

Sounds great. Thanks for posting.
I had planned to create a basic wet/dry bulb thermisistor control unit to get accurate humidity readings but never got around to it.
Good luck with the writeup, I'm sure we all look forward to reading it.

I must admit the competitive spirit within me is screaming for me to bring my flavor of automation here. I have a lot of hard work and code that should have been made available long ago (I've been developing off and on since '03)
I am open to collaboration. I will be composing my tek under the automation section of the main site. Should there be more than one option for people looking to automate, we should present them equally for them to choose. Optionally, a third party could write an unbiased comparison.
What do you think of this?

in my opinion you should just start posting it in there, they have a discussions box at the bottom, so while your working on it people can give you idea's and stuff, same thing to the other people with there tek.
I mean look at the other topics, they all have like 10 teks around the same basic idea

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but a great source of information and products about these sorts of automated systems can been found from the aquarium hobby. I would recommend joining www.reefcentral.com , it's the biggest forum.
Many people DIY this stuff, there will definitely be source code already written that would probably only need minor changes etc.
There are many kits too - but being the aquarium hobby there are expensive along with cheap options. Dr Aquarium is an example, there are loads of them.

I just bought an Arduino for exactly this application, my [ZX81!] programming is way rusty but it does not really seem that complicated ...with a bit of practice.
I already have basic humidity/temp automation in my fruiting chamber and incubation room with 'stats but as I am setting up a larger gourmet operation I want to take it to the next level. For example - having fixed picking times where the temp and humidity are regulated to give best shelf life, and a learning cycle for humidity/temp so it can slow the inputs as it approaches the desired level, diurnal environment fluctuations (Tmp/Hum/Lt/CO2) for species that prefer it etc.
I managed to figure out using a couple of shift registers with the Arduino so it looks like the sht11 is a similar operation (he says confidently!).
The beauty of the Arduino is that once programmed it can be detached from the PC and run off a separate power source, things like SD card logging can be added cheaply and by buying component level sensors you save a fortune on 'stats.
So count me in for this project and I will post any results I get - which won't be immediate but should be something.

Mmmm! Goddamn, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some plain ole Agaricus right, but he springs this serious GOURMET shit on us!
