Anti-Gay Marriage Group Fights Against Marijuana Legalization
SACRAMENTO - The fight to legalize marijuana is about to take on a political heavy hitter. SaveCalifornia.com, the people who backed Prop 8 and opposed Gay Marriage, is about to launch StopProp19.com.
The site will be up and running by Wednesday, but a public service is set to launch on YouTube sometime Monday. Sunday night, however, FOX40 was the first Sacramento Television Station to get an early peek. There's no announcer or sound bites, but the production is dramatic and the messages are powerful. One claim reads marijuana is "The number one addiction for 60% of teens in drug rehab." Another claims marijuana is "50-70% more CANCER-CAUSING than Cigarettes."
"You're going to have messed up minds, messed up lives, messed up families." Randy Thomasson led the charge against Gay Marriage; now he's taking on the legalization of Marijuana, "Regularly marijuana smoking among teenagers and young adults does permanent lung damage and permanent brain alterations."
According to a Sacramento Bee/Field Poll the debate is close. 47% believe marijuana should be legalized, but with controls. 4% are in favor with no controls. 19% believe the current law should be enforced. 14% want new laws with tougher penalties. And, 13% support present laws, but with less severe penalties.
"I'm high right now," that's what one man told FOX40 earlier this year as he walked down a sidewalk in the middle of the day. In 2010, 47% of the people surveyed admit smoking marijuana; that's more than at any time since the height of pot smoking in the late 1970's.
But this isn't your parents grass; and drug agencies like the DEA agree, "The marijuana today is 4-times more mind altering than in the 1970's, more potent. So, to say that this is helpful or necessary is really a hoax."
StopProp19.com has experience in its corner. But this time the movement isn't backed by big money. In fact, this fight probably won't come down to money. Less than $500,000 has been raised by both sides of the controversial debate. "This is why you even have liberal democrats and conservative republicans agreeing in the political spectrum to say no way to prop 19," says Thomasson.
Like any ballot election in California, expect campaign spending to pick up as election day nears. StopProp19.com expects to receive an infusion of political cash; at which point the message will move to television and radio. For now though, the website, YouTube and a slew of bumper stickers are the weapons of this political fight.

So it basically seems like their strategy here is to break out all the old and tired myths and scary phrases like "permanent brain alterations" ( ) Every single factoid they're bandying about here is misleading or patently false.
Then again, the article itself says that these are the same folks who opposed gay marriage. I've never heard a single legitimate reason to oppose the right to a state-recognized marriage between consenting adults. It's like these people have never even heard of the Constitution. Of course, threaten their gun rights, and they'll hoot and holler about the 2nd Amendment 'til your ears are sore. "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" my ass - only for good, God-fearing, red-blooded Christian Americans!

I knew it. Started seeing these fuckers out of state cars with their praise jehebus on their bumpers and just knew they are going to try and pull the same shit they did on prop 8. You would think they ran out of cash from prop 8 disaster. 
Wish the damn Morman church would just keep their noses out of everyone else's business.Someone should pull a Bush and start saying that anyone who votes against prop 19 is supporting the mexican drug cartels and organized crime and in bed with the real criminals. See how that would fly.

I wanted to weigh in on this, but my opinion has already been stated better than I could have said by the two posts before mine.
I just am floored by the fact that alcohol is legal (with age restrictions) and it has been PROVEN that alcohol has caused more deaths than MJ, more addictive than MJ (I believe it can have some psychological addictive qualities), and can put others at risk while driving.
How many deaths due to MJ? How many deaths due to alcohol? How many people get high on pot, and then beat their wives or lovers? Stoners aren't violent people! Jeez, our country would be so much better if everyone took a toke or two.
I think our religious populations need more pot.

First off, the only reason there are so many "teens" in rehab is because they chose it over jail/fine/probation when they got caught with a small amount, not because they had a serious problem that led to rehab. That statistic has been debunked times over.
Next, it doesn't cause permanent or really significant lung damage unless combined with tobacco which is worse than either one alone.
The term "regularly" is vague and therefor meaningless. They are basically not offering an amount that constitutes "regularly" or frequency of use to the same effect. People who smoke too much weed in terms of their own personal traits will have problems. When they stop smoking the problems usually recede.
Nor is there conclusive evidence to show that marijuana smoking causes cancer. Nor permanent brain alterations. The people with permanent brain changes are those who started in their early teens at the latest. Beyond that the effect on brain development/potential for addiction diminishes.
The term "messed up minds" implies that there is no value in the mind state that weed puts you in, which is dismissive. The term "messed up families" is ridiculous because weed alone doesn't tend to lead to violence or neglect. That's alcohol most of the time.

Crap. I was really dreading that these folks would join the fight.
Alright, well, I guess all we can do is fight harder than they do. If we do a better job spreading truth than they do spreading lies, then it's a no-brainer that 19 will pass in November.
