risk/reward for disabling windows update
    #13019998 - 08/08/10 02:33 AM (2 years, 9 months ago)

I just reinstalled xp on the computer and its an older version so Ive got a pretty hefty list of updates that need to be installed. Is there any real benefit? Is there any real risk if I dont? Whats the deal? .NET frameworks and all kinds a shit I dont understand...

you wont get security updates which is a major major risk. any benefit you may get will be minor and not worth the gamble.

why would you not install this stuff?

if its an older installation disk and you need to download a lot of stuff you can just slipstream the installation onto a dvd.. you will need to reinstall the OS if you go the slipstream route.

Eh I guess Im just not familiar with all the updates and dont know the purpose so Im slightly hesitant to trust it. I dont know what all this .net framework stuff is. My copy of windows is a cracked version and I download the occasional torrent. I dont know if microsoft is tryin to pull one over on me or not...

If you're running a cracked version you most likely won't be able to do the updates anyway. Especially XP , as many of the cracked versions are already known to Microsoft.

You can get a systems builder version of 7 for $99.

That's true all throughout Windows, and really down into the chips.
If you have a legal copy, not pirated, let it update.

you can update a pirated copy.

if you dont update its only a matter of time until the install is fucked and youll have to reinstall again.

MS issues security patches once a month and 9 times out of 10 it is for a major security hole.

dont be dumb. update.

i had the original xp disc, vaguely remember how after a clean install IE would immediately take you to a website alerting you that you had a virus and selling you the fix...  they were able to do this w/ a messenger service vulnerability..  so yah, you wanna update... or better yet, d/l ubuntu and get rid of that shit... operating systems are the last on my list for software to pirate

When XP first came out, it was released with the messenger service turned on. Dickheads used that to send messages to the user for all sorts of crap. It's easy to turn off and releases service pack 1 and up came with the messenger service turned off by default.

If you don't have service pack 2,  you're already infected.

http://windizupdate.com/

This is the site you need.

It basically is a non Microsoft site that installs the official updates on your computer, without checking to make sure your version is legit.

I've used it for years with various pirated Windows XP installations.

Wow.  I totally just jinxed the fuck out of myself.

Not an hour after posting this, up pops [insert fake name] anti-virus has detected a virus...

I hit ctrl-alt-delete to try and get task-manager to close the non-existent antivirus "software" and I get a warning that task manager is curropted and can't be open...  go to shut down my computer, and "windows log off cannot be opened"

christ...  serves me right for using pirated os, and downloading movies and shit without any kind of anti virus my computer i guess...

oh well, it's time to reformat anyway, good thing I keep important documents and data separate from downloaded crap and os files...

Update it or get a new copy with the most recent updates into SP3. Even a downloaded copy of XP I run on one rarely used computer allows me to upgrade. Of course it was released in march or so.

this

its a mirror for the real windows update that just sends that you are a valid copy...don't know if it automatically removes the Windows Genuine (dis)Advantage stuff, just do custom and make sure you avoid that and will be fine updating...i used pirated xp for a long time, until I had no need to pirate an OS

I recomend disabling windows update if you want some control over your computer.  After having updates crash my computer a few times, I shut the damn thing off and now am not part of what appears to be Microsoft's "open beta" strategy.

Now I install the updates, manually, I want and only do so when there's both reason to do so and sufficient time for the victims of the "open beta" policy to warn me away from the updates that should be avoided.
