Mexican Drug War Stats
    #12965559 - 07/28/10 06:38 AM (1 year, 9 months ago)

Going through an article in the paper this morning, found the following statistics worth posting:

  • The Mexican government arrested 226,667 drug suspects between December 2006-September 2009.  Less than 25% were charged and only 15% saw a verdict.  (Except the Mexican Attorney General won't say how many were actually guilty verdicts.)

  • Nearly 25,000 people have died in the drug war to date. The vast majority of their cases remain unsolved.

  • In Ciudad Juarez, a war between two cartels over trafficking routes killed 2,600 people in 2009.  Prosecuters filed 93 homicide cases and got 19 convictions.  Only five were for first-degree murder.

Basically, the joint police-army operations are all around picking up people they suspect of these murders just to parade them in front of the television with guns and drugs; however, they never get prosecuted.  Sure, the police will torture them into a confession, but then they either get released for lack of evidence or the cartels end up having them released [They own everyone.  Silver or lead?].  The latest mass murder (17 dead at a birthday party on July 25) was orchestrated by a prison director and three guards in order to settle a drug debt.  They released four prisoners and armed them to the teeth.  The men went out, committed mass murder, and have since been detained AND have not yet been charged.

I'm not trying to be like "stop the drug war" because I know that's completely unrealistic but no one can deny the fact that America is fueling this fire every day.

There's no important difference in the world that you and/or I can make regarding drug laws.

...that's why I said I knew it was unrealistic so I wasn't trying to say "stop the drug war"  ?

If it wasn't drugs it would just be something else. A black market will always exist.

Yeah, we'll just legalize everything, and everyone will magically start getting along. Society will naturally reshape itself into a big hippie live fest.

Treatment is cheaper than jail, so yeah it's a start.

Just some random article I pulled from wikipedia, though I'm sure there's many more.

Here's an entire article about this topic over at SN -> Billions Wasted in Mexico Pushing Failed U.S. Drug War Tactics It's well worth the read.
