Public Speaking Skills
    #12926375 - 07/20/10 08:32 PM (2 years, 9 months ago)

Someone give me some quick tips or advice to help me out here? I can choke through a few presentations in my smaller grad classes, but on Thursday I have to give a presentation to several doctors, a group of biomedical professors, along with my research manager and the director of neurology.

My future basically hangs on the line here. I'm quite the conversationalist; usually an annoyingly verbal little fuck, but I don't play well into status games or social roles of "presenters", "podiums", and "audience". I get more nervous than a porn star during a pappy check.

Protips or tricks?

I was thinking about this, but I don't have access at the moment. Ironically I will be discussing benzos, ketamine, and anti-convulsants, among other things.

Xanax/valium saved my ass many a times in school.

At any rate, best of luck. Move confidently into their midst.

Protip - Have a great mindset.

You are the shiznit, the beesknees, cats pajamas. Dude, chicks are running towards you right now naked and horny.  When people see you on the street they say "HIGH FIVE DUDE". You ignore them as you are too cool for that.

Speak slowly. Probably the best tip I can give you. I forget most of the other stuff from my speaking class. Also, notecards wouldn't hurt. Since it's a presentation and not a speech you can just jot down a few lines and make sure you hit all the talking points.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

Note cards will help, and confidence is definitely key. I just get nervous knowing I am directing the whole thing (in addition to a slew of beady eyed faces staring blankly at me).

Picture all of them naked, since you will be the only one wearing clothes, it will be easy.

Practice.  Over and over.

Personally, I memorize pretty much verbatim the first 2-3 minutes of a presentation.  Once you identify difficult sections/areas, I often have those memorized as well.

I also lean towards using as few words as possible.  I hate when people ramble or go from section to section.

Has always worked for me.

Nicely done. It probably helps to know that they aren't harshly judging me and probably care a great deal less than I assume they do.

If I yell too loud, we might all wake up from the dream.

Well, during one part I made it a point to propose that the neuroprotective qualities of ketamine make it a viable anesthetic (gotta slip in progress and represent our community well).

Thanks.

I'm gonna get back to the practicing part now. I need to brainwash myself with the information.

for me id say, the best way to do well in public speaking is to really know what your talking about. practice practice practice your talk 10 times over if you need to, and nkow every bit of it off the top of your head. i find that if im walking into a presentation, and i know what im saying and what i have to get out there 100% then the talk is easy and you just say what needs to be said, rather then stuttering through it and remembering bits and pieces and getting the dreaded forgetfullness and ensuing OH SHIT OH SHIT AHH UMM HMMM YEAH...

and also just take your time while talking and dont forget to breathe. its fine to pause every now and then to breathe or grab a drink of water and centre yourself between topics/points.
