Politicians know that any issue they can use to scare the hell out of the ignorant masses is a fine way to get lots of votes. They don't know and don't care about the actual issue at hand, they just want you to know how horribly dangerous the world is and how hard they're working to protect your children.
We failed miserably at making alcohol illegal because it's huge in our culture despite being possibly the most dangerous and sickening intoxicant known to man, so now it's on to everything else that's not as popular and thus has a more favorable ratio of knowledgeable users versus the suggestible ignorant.

I don't think anyone mentioned in that article has ever actually seen salvia... the sad thing is a lot of people will probably believe what they're saying. for most people, this was probably the first time they even heard of salvia. its terrible how they can take a plant that, in relation to society, is totally benign and most people don't even know about, and turn it into a evil drug that'll destroy your kids. most people don't even like salvia, if one hit actually was like the best weed ever like they said, I think it might be a little more popular. but what do I know?

They were talking about a JWH blend at that moment in the article. I didn't catch it on the first read through, they switch from salvia to JWH without telling you.

To them, all non-prohibited drugs that don't make for cute lawns or tasty seasonings are identical threats and must be scheduled ASAP.
I'm serious though, what about nutmeg and datura and San Pedro and morning glory? These things are fucking everywhere, but straight people MUST have them in their kitchens and gardens so no one treats them as a threat. Something like salvia though, an inconspicuous, ordinary-looking ethnobotanical with extreme but harmless psychoactive effects? BAN BAN BAN.
I'm glad the whole salvia prohibitionist movement lost steam so fast. It's only natural given how ridiculous the whole thing is. I was getting worried that I'd have to keep my own salvia plant if I ever wanted to try it again, but already most reactionaries have gotten over it and are now freaking out over mephedrone and JWH blends, which actually pose a (somewhat) legitimate cause for concern.

It's called Salvia and officers say it's very similar to marijuana.
Dead fucking wrong.

Basically it's a plant that grows.
As opposed to?

"A lot of people I work with said it's like the best weed you ever smoke, but it doesn't turn up (on drug tests) at all," says one customer.

Crouch says, "When we have a substance that creates an hallucinogenic effect on people and it's legal, particularly young people you're kind of giving them the message that it's okay to get high."
Because millions of adderall prescriptions to damage children's brains in order to make them less annoying didn't do that.
