Sort of around the Calgary area, What kind of outdoor Edible/medicinal/actives would I be potentially able to grow?

Calgary = cold right? If so there are some species that can deal with cold somewhat. Enoki and nameko I believe both like fairly low temps though I don't imagine they want like tundra. Oysters have a very wide temperature range.

calgary=cold right?
that made me laugh pretty hard.
Your looking at...Shiitake, King Stroph (Wine Cap), Oysters, Just about any active (except pans?), Lions Mane, Nameko (though I've never heard of it being outdoor). Probably a few others as well, you've got plenty of options in Canada. I can't keep up with my oysters outside.

its a wierd climate there. very cold ass winters and then the summer is hella hot and dry. both terrible things for mushrooms.
but with enough work i think you may be able to pull something off. id say wine caps could be done. how bigs your yard? oysters are always possible too. do you have any trees there ?

In my yard? My oysters are low to the ground in a shady spot. If it gets crazy dry/hot...i dump a pile of water into the patch so when it evaporates, makes a nice climate for it.
I do have 2 or 3 tree's, I keep my mushrooms in the shady spots...the only way they grow properly.

naw i meant the OP, is there trees left in alberta.
i have my oyster bags hanging from a big dogwood. no birds and squirels can get at them this way. i got raped a month ago by the friggin bluejays, ate my best flush !! when i didnt have em hanging. when these spores drop, there is a chip patch underneath where i burried some colonized phonebooks. hopefully i get flushes from the ground too.

I've got a pretty large yard with a good number of trees. I'll be starting the wine caps, some lions mane and shiitake, what about shaggy mane? If I wanted some woodloving actives, would I need to prepare a tub of substrate in advance to compensate for the short warm season we have here?

if you read any of stamets books he says what works for wine caps is essentially the same for the cyans and allies . altho i find the wine cap myc is 10 times more vigorous than the cyan myc.
