Flowering cacti and colorful succulents - a request
    #12631135 - 05/26/10 08:59 AM (2 years, 1 day ago)

So I am pretty much on "help my syster not kill her garden" duity for life (She has little time and often forgets to water her plants/lawn)

She has asked me to plan something for her front yard, she likes flowers and succulents a lot, so I suggested a cacti and succulent garden.

She says she will provide whatever funding is necessary and such so that translates to me as YAY I GET TO SET UP A KICK ASS CACTUS GARDEN!!!!!!!

So, my request is:

Could y'all give me suggestions on different types of

-cacti that are showy on the flowering dept
-succulents that are colorful
-cacti and succulents that are just downright mfing cool heheheh

I already have a couple of pups growing on my San Pedro, so she is defenetly getting those and I also have a succulent that was refered to as "donkey ears" by the man who sold it to me, so thats going there too..

if y'all include pictures and general watering needs would be totally awesome

Thank y'all so much for the help!

I like delosperma.  And they're rumored to have kanna-like alkaloids.

AFAIK some delosperma contain DMT too, specifically cooperi.

How odd.  There was a cactus that was rumored to contain DMT but it seems to have been a bungled test.  The molecule seems out of place in the succulent kingdom IMO.

Edit:  Come to think of it, the acacia that contained the drug cocktail was disproven too.  I'm a little skeptical of content claims nowadays.

;_; her aloe plant is. . .;_; I'll post pics of the poor thing.

I told her that if she wanted me to set up a cacti garden it HAD TO be in her front yard where I can go mess with it and care for it when she is not home.

The problem is her aloe is in her back yard which is fenced and locked, so I cant just go in there and help out the poor things.

Just last week I found like 30lbs of prickly cactus (some person had clipped their yard. left more cactus in the trash than in the ground *rolls eyes*) I planted a couple of cuttings of it in her back yard to see if she can keep those alive, they are pretty indipendent

So,why wont she leave you a key,or access the back yard??? she is your sister:grin:But yeah,if she kills prickly pear cactus, they there is a problem:grin: Mine wont die for anything, and I left them outdoors all winter here, with temps in the teens for weeks, and it didn't even phase them.they are one of the most hardiest cacti I know of:grin:

hehehe, i've asked her to do so a couple of times, I dont really know why she has just never gone around to doing so, honestly I think she doesnt knoe where the keys are most of the time, she is a night nurse so most of the time she is zzzzzzzzzzzz

I hope they make it, if they dont it'll be confirmed that she is 110% less nurturing than a dessert

I have a good list going for flowers I think, i found most of these names online.

echinopsis multiplex. (tubby! I love tubby cacti!)
Frailea mammifera
Rebutia eos v. roseiflora
Opuntia basilaris

I wrote most of this last night but forgot to post it. Hope it is still applicable...

Like KBG said, Echeveria are a good choice and there are so many varieties and colours. Others like Agave have many choices and make good features, I quite like Agave parryi huachucensis.

Agave attenuata also is a good one.

Sansevieria make good screens or breaks through a garden, also a few colours to choose from and are tough as nails.

Jade plants like Crassula ovata and other Crassula species Aeonium arboreum for a bit of
height.

For shady areas use some Clivia sp., they have nice strappy leaves and flower. The seeds are also attractive.

Kalanchoe are rather cool too. Their leaves go a nice red colour when exposed to cold weather. Some like Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi have attractive flowers too.

Another tough as one is Sedum, they flower in Autumn and can be divided to make new plants.

Yeah there's a lot to consider but the good thing about gardens is you can add to them as you go. Put a plant in here and a few over there when you can afford it. The great thing about succulent gardens is you only need one or two specimens and then you can propagate your own plants from them because they are just so damn easy to grow. Before long you've created a wilderness!
