Melbourne Eastern Suburbs ID Request - Went for a pretty large hunt
#12642756 - 05/28/10 01:40 AM (2 years, 11 months ago) |

So I've recently developed somewhat of a keen interest in mushrooms. I went for a rather large hunt yesterday, and had to resist not picking every mushroom i saw, but i still found a wide variety that interested me. I thought the best way to learn would to get some ID's on these and then read up on them myself.
Please note: I may have got some mixed up a bit, so please tell me if you notice any in the same picture are actually different types
Section 1 - All these mushrooms where found in dried up bark/branches around the base of various oak trees in a park in the eastern suburbs of melbourne

Nice ID request.
2A are active Subaeruginosa. Wait for a trusted Identifier though.
And for next time, please either upload images using the shroomery uploader or resize them and [img] tag them. Makes things faster.

Ah, thought they might be subs, but they looked a little different to the subs i found last time, and the other ones i thought were subs (2D).
And i uploaded some lower res images and put them in the thread =) Links to the high res images are still there.

That's a lot better. I suspect both 2a and 2d are subs.
2h I'm confused about. Maybe subs that have been sprayed with red fungicide?
By the way, best ID request I've seen. Props for putting in that much effort.

My guesses..
1E Leratiomyces ceres
2A Psilocybe subaeruginosa
2C Mycena sp.
2D Psilocybe subaeruginosa
2E Maybe Marasmius elegans
2F Leratiomyces ceres
2H Psilocybe subaeruginosa that have been sprayed with some Agrichemical. I'd discard those ones.
2I looks like a Xerula sp.

Is that red stuff really a chemical? I have never seen anything like that.
Hey OP, does this seem plausible? I assume these were all in a similar area, which would be odd if only one species of mushroom had this strange, red, "agri-chemical" on them.
I wish I could ask more of Alan about this, but he has me on ignore.

2E could be Collybia, perhaps hariolorum.

The red is a dye, it's a common practice here in parks and gardens and around roadsides. By law they need to put the dye in so as the public and pet owners know the area has been sprayed.

Yep, I've seen a lot of that recently. In fact I was hunting only a few days ago and there they were spraying weeds. Sadly a lot of these mushrooms take refuge near weeds and so they take the full brunt of the poison. There goes my speculation that the workers actually collected them.

Crazy.
Luckily everyone here (at least in public places) lets the weeds run rampant, or puts cardboard under wood chips to help deter their growth...
