You'd be better off shining the light in the sides. More light will hit the substrate that way. 80% of the surface area to absorb light is on the sides, only 20% is on the top. Best bet would be to position the light slightly above and to one side of the tub. Hopefully it's a clear tub with just a colored lid that you cut out? If not, get one for next time.

I'm afraid it's a solid colored tub. I think positioning the light to the top is my only option right now. I'll make note of the clear tub for next time.
