Real Cheesesteaks, ain't supposed to look pretty...

Second highest rated cheesesteak place next to only John's Roast Pork

It ain't pretty, but it ain't s'posed to be.  The bread is baked from that place alone.

Haha, holy shit man, that thing is DRENCHED in processed cheesy goodness! :drooling:

I had a cheese steak from a li'l joint known as Coyote Sam's up in Fairfield just a week and a half ago (in conjunction with some supurb fried catfish).  Damn good in fact!  But damn, that thing right there is downright ridonkulous! :crazy2:

I would like to take this opportunity to propose that you start a Cheesesteak Diary, wherein you make a journal comprised of images of all the cheesesteaks you have had the pleasure to experience whilst living o'er in yonder Philadelphia.

You know once you get back to the west coast you're going to miss those disgustingly delicious heart bombs! :crying:

On the brighter side, once you DO get back to the west coast, you can start eating more of these bad ass mofo's :hehehe:

you know the thought of creating a blog like that, and I probably will start making a habit of carrying my camera around to the cheesesteak places.

I do miss Tacos, and a good double double, or just a chili cheese fries at Tommy's.

But there will always be a part of me that will miss a true philly cheesesteak.

its all about the bread, and the quality of meat

Most places use Amarosa, which is the industry standard for cheesesteaks.

But the best places out here bake their own bread fresh every day.

If you are talkin' about Lucky Boy, definitely make sure you add chili meat to the breakfast burrito, it's the lube that makes its greatness!
If you're talkin' about Coyote Sam's, the fried catfish is money in the bank!  Here's a review I wrote on that Fairfield joint:
Quote:

I can't be certain, but I contend that most Californians just might not be able to appreciate solid soul food for the sole reason that they lack a familiarity with it!  Now if Sam's was located down South in the heart of soul food country, it would not merit this 5 star rating; but it's not!  And it's not often one finds a place like Coyote Sam's amidst all of the Jack in the Cracks, Chipotle's, KFC's and Taco Hells that pepper this land.

To brush some technicals by the wayside, let's set some common misconceptions to rest right out the gate. Despite Sam's advertising the claim front and center on their takeout menu that they're a "quick service restaurant", you should expect to wait an easy 15 - 30 minutes for your food from the time you place your order. A standard fried cat fish plate will lean closer to 15 minutes whereas the fried chicken took 30.  Lots of customers in line ahead of you?  Lots more waiting.  Knowing this going in should help prevent you from allowing your expectations to color your satisfaction before you even get to taste the food; as it seems may have been the case for some of the other reviewers here.

The joint features an open kitchen where you can watch your order being freshly battered and laid into a well seasoned fry basket. The catfish is fresh, moist, not greasy but definitely delicious with their home made tartar sauce, hot sauce and malted vinegar. Though still a relatively new patron, m'lady and I are working our way through their menu and have found great satisfaction with their fried chicken and ribs, not to mention Sam's formidable arsenal of tasty southern style sides - from the tender moist & flavorful greens to the amazingly creamy peppered cole slaw, and their mashed taters with gravy. Cornbread comes in at decent, not great but surely not bad either!

For those seeking an honest operation with honestly good food at a reasonable price, the homey laid back atmosphere in Coyote Sam's, conjuring to wake your salivary glands with the potent aroma of slow-fast food prepared with love soon as you walk in the door... This is a fantastic option.  Expect to pay $6 - $12 per person.  Standard beers are available as well as plenty of BBQ sandwiches which I've yet to try. Tri-tip, brisket, pork ribs, catfish, cod, red beans & rice and candied yams... These are but a selection of the satisfying soul food Coyote Sam's brings to the table. If you have a little patience and a hearty appetite, I can't imagine that Sam's won't deliver. Try it and see for yourself!

Looks good but I think Im getting too old to handle a sandwich like that.  I went to this steak place near me which I read was supposed to be excellent.  And honestly it was really damn good, the owner comes from philly and used to work at some well known philly joint (not toursity genos or something, a respectable place).  Anyways its just too much sandwich for me at this point.  I think if I got it again Id need to go with provolone over whiz, and less of it in general.  I got the large size (12 incher) for lunch and was promptly knocked out for the rest of the day.

Are sweet and spicy peppers traditional on a philly steak?  I cant imagine eating one without some kind of vinegar or spiciness on it, but Ive always wondered if that's just some west coast deal.

nah most cheesesteak places u go to, they'll offer a side of pickles, hot peppers, various other similar pickled garnishes like a pepper chutney.

It's definitely a key part of the whole experience.
