As much as you're going to hate to hear this but a shot of the underside will really help. Just going off of the pic there, Gloephyllum sepiarium comes to mind. If it is it will have a very distinct gill pattern underneath. By no means is this an id, just a guess.....

Interesting. I'll see if I can find out whether it has pores or gills. I had assumed it would have, thinking it a Ganoderma species, but didn't ask to clarify.

It kinda looks like a young Phaeolus schweinitzii.

It does resemble a Phaeolus schweinitzii Bob, but it doesn't appear to have a velvety surface.

It also appears to be of a different consistency.

I don't see any pine needles in the pics either. I wonder how big it is...

Just for the sake of conversation, they loose the velvety texture and become woodt or corky.

So it has pores, I know that much now. Same texture as a Ganoderma species too apparently.

Measures 24cm across. Spores could be golden brown from what he could tell of the immature spores...

Alright, so I was sent a sample of the mushroom. It has tiny brown pores and bright golden coloured flesh when broken open. I'll try to take some photos of the section I received tomorrow. Any of that info help narrow it down? The brown pore surface rules out the genus Ganoderma as far as I can tell.
