Cool pics and nice finds, Bobzimmer!
Now I am confused, though, because I found that same Ganoderma in your first few pictures and was under the impression I had found Ganoderma lucidum, or the Reishi mushroom. I posted the pics yesterday asking for confirmation on its identity, and everyone seemed to agree with my ID.
So which Ganoderma is that?? It's really cool, whatever it is!

Ganoderma lucidum grows on hardwood. Gandoderma tsugae grows on conifer.

Thanks, Snork!

They are one of our Spring Entolomas. Easily the most common mushroom in the woods right now around here.

Really? Pretty common around here...There's a bit of hemlock and various pines in this area. I wonder if they have the same properties as G. lucidum?

I'll try to keep my hands off of your shiny, lustrous, skin....
Wait, "Derma" would mean "feminine skin", wouldn't it?

Nice shots Bob. Really beautiful looking spot to hunt too.
Will you be printing/cloning any of those G. tsugae?
I wonder, is what you actually find in North America actually G. lucidum? It seems likely, considering the temperate climate there, but if so, it's probably different to the "G. lucidum" in cultivation, as at least one recent study has shown. See this thread for more info.
Apparently all Ganoderma species have medicinal qualitites.

Thanks, Trip! No I have no plans to culture this mushroom. I will attempt to collect spores or tissue if you want some.
Thanks also for the link. Interesting stuff!

I'd be interested in some spores or a tissue sample.

Cool. No problem if it is a hassle or anything. It's all good in the hood.

Great pics Bob! I have found logs with a few Ganoderma on them but nothing like that. That one pic of the whole log just covered is awesome!

I happen to find that when the mushroom is still young, you CAN actually eat the fresh outer white growth. Resembles common white button, but stringy/fiberous...the flavor is phenomenal. Prove me wrong..the rest is unedible...save for the white, it's like eating babies.

What's the flavour like? The flavour of mature "G. lucidum" is disgusting.

No, it's no problem. I already collected a specimen, but I don't cultivate, so I have no agar or liquid culture to put it in. I don't know if dried tissue sample will work. The alternative is to wait until they start dropping spores and collect some. That's easy enough if I can time it right...
