Amendment 2 - Right to Bear Arms. Ratified 12/15/1791.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Modern translation: A well-armed and regulated military is required for the security of a free nation. Thus, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be restricted.
Why? In case the military tries a coup. They figured guerilla warriors defeated an army once, it could easily happen again.

incorrect, the military is not the militia, they're the military, the
national guard of the individual states is considered to be the militia by
many but the militia is the citizens, that's why the right of the people
shall not be infringed
