A major, multi-million dollar drug bust on the Gold Coast has uncovered an interstate drug network, with links to outlaw bikie gangs, police say.
The distribution network, which allegedly peddled illegal drugs along the east coast as far south as Melbourne, was uncovered after police raided several properties on the Gold Coast and Cairns this morning.
The network was allegedly poised to sell $2.5 million worth of illicit drugs, including 91 kilograms of cannabis, 2.5kg of methylamphetamines and 2.2kg of ecstasy as well as steroids and cocaine.
Five people were arrested on 19 drug related charges, including trafficking and supplying dangerous drugs.
Today's raids were the final phase of an extensive covert joint investigation between the Crime and Misconduct Commission and police in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, dubbed `Operation Warrior'.
The operation was launched last year to investigate organised crime and the production, supply and distribution of illicit drugs along the east coast of Australia.
The final arrests came after raids on 20 properties in Cairns, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne last month, where more than $650,000 in cash was seized, as well as large amounts of cannabis and chemicals used in the production of GHB, commonly known as fantasy.
Those involved had allegedly cashed in on their lucrative business, buying luxury houses and cars collectively worth $7 million.
Police also seized $1.2 million in cash during the investigation.
"In total 71 arrests have been made on 283 serious drug related charges, including 24 people for drug trafficking," said Detective Acting Chief Superintendent Ian Parsons, CMC Director of Crime Operations.
"A drug production laboratory and two hydroponics cannabis 'grow houses' were also located during the investigation."
