Stereo to Bass Amp

Hey everyone, I work off of a laptop and I'm not too crazy about the speakers, and don't want to buy a new one. I have an amplifier I use with my bass (its pretty standard, I think 60 watts), and have read about converters from stereo to amp. I don't really want to spend money on the project, but I have lots of crappy old earphones lying around and an extra guitar cable I can spare. So the question is, how would I go about splicing them together to get good (not perfect) sound quality?
I was experimenting last night, and discovered that the stereo wires are made up of two pairs - one of a red coil and a gold coil, and one of a blue coil and white coil. The guitar cable is made up of two sets of very thin (high gauge?) wire - about 1 part covered in a rubber sleeve and 2 parts loose. while I was experimenting, I figured out that sound is transmitted through the sleeved wires, and silence through the unsleeved - if the two are touching then there is a subdued version of the sound. I had the red + gold stereo pair connected to the sleeved amp cable and the blue + white to the other one, and there was a subdued sound. I think I tried with just the red + gold on the sleeved cable and there was no sound. I'm totally lost... can anyone suggest anything?
