Nationwide police drugs bust nets hundreds of people
NZPA April 27, 2010, 4:17 pm
A nationwide drugs bust has put hundreds of people before the courts, with many of them facing charges for selling equipment to make secret gardens for growing cannabis.
Police swooped on 35 businesses and homes throughout the country today as part of a two-year undercover police operation code named Operation Lime. The operation targeted businesses and individuals commercially selling equipment used for growing cannabis.
Once police knew who was buying the gear, they launched more stings to catch their targets in the act of growing and selling drugs.
Police said the search warrants included all 16 branches and a distribution centre of a major national supplier of indoor hydroponic growing supplies.
Directors and managers were among the arrested today and they were due to appear in courts throughout the country on charges which included cultivating cannabis and participating in an organised criminal group.
Police Deputy Commissioner Rob Pope said Operation Lime would "break the cornerstone of the illicit cannabis cultivation industry."
Search warrants were executed in every police district today, he said in a statement.
"Cannabis is the most abused controlled drug in New Zealand. The harm that this drug causes New Zealand communities can be conservatively estimated at $430 million a year. It hurts every community in every part of the country."
During the operation undercover police bought equipment, were given advice on how to grow cannabis, "and even purchased cannabis clones and other drugs over the counter from these offenders."
Mr Pope said businesses had been selling drugs and supporting commercial cannabis growers and organised crime for a long time and the operation had stopped the supply of equipment to grow drugs.
The 250 people arrested face more than 700 charges. They were employees, managers and directors of the companies and growers involved. More than 100 commercial cannabis growing operations linked to the businesses were also raided.
Police said they also seized methamphetamine, LSD, ecstasy and firearms.
Mr Pope said suppliers of illicit equipment to growers would continue to be targeted.
"Criminals buying equipment for their cannabis grows were observed and followed. If people purchase these products for illegal purposes, they can expect to receive a visit from the police.
"Today we are sending a strong message to those who seek to profit from the cannabis industry -- you will not get away with it."
Using hydroponic gear to grow fruit and vegetables indoors and under lights was "exceedingly expensive" and it was not a viable propositio, police said. Because of that, the gear was predominantly sold to grow drugs.
Proceedings would also start under the new Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009 to seize assets and money but police said honest suppliers of equipment to genuine gardeners were not targeted in the operation.
The online auction site TradeMe today also banned trading in equipment used to cultivate cannabis.

Is this actually worked out some way? or is it just bullshit?

This seemed illegal until I read this:
Quote:

That is where they screwed up.
Their intention was likely an effort to boost sales by breaking the law. If you are going to sell things that can be used for purposes other than legal intended purposes, you can not suggest and even help people use it for illegal purposes. If someone said "I need to buy cannabis lights to grow weed" it is their duty to say "well we don't sell those, get out of our store and never come back or we will trespass you". Also, selling things that are already illegal at a local store is epic fail.

I agree with guest, but its also sad because im sure that not all stores promoted or gave advice on it, but all were prosecuted, and not even just big companies, but small family owned stores with no intention of supplying illegal equipment.
I think that if SOG had been careful and didnt promote it so hardcore it wouldnt have happened. But tbh ive gone into the store and asked them directly what was needed and was told all the relative information, so yeah.

There's probably some calculator of theirs and they just inflate the "results" majorly to come up with some randomly impressive number. I love how they call it a controlled drug, because it's not controlled at all. They like to think they have a handle on things, but they really don't.
Things are pretty fucked up down here. We can't even get a discussion on medical pot without being screamed down by everyone. Ironically, the Progressive party's Jim Anderton refuses to acknowledge any benefits of marijuana (mainly because his daughter had drug issues and ended up killing herself, so of course he's professional about this and doesn't let it cloud his judgement when doing his job....).

Yeah for real. Talk about a statement that isn't backed up AT ALL. I fail to see how it causes any appreciable harm anywhere near the quoted number... except for law enforcement costs . Which can easily be eliminated by making the drug legal, showing that the drug itself has absolutely NOTHING to do with the financial harm associated with it.

Police are the most abusive uncontrolled group of people anywhere. The catastrophic harm caused by these poorly-educated dishonest alpha males can be conservatively estimated at 430 unjustified murders a day. It hurts every community in every part of the world, but no one is going to do anything about it because everybody else is abusing cannabis.
So I guess weed is bad.

What a joke. Sometimes I wonder if the only reason bud is illegal in NZ is so the police have something to do and have a bit more pocket money. Our public isnt consulted, and our govt. is an Oligarchy, not a Democracy in my opinion. They do whatever they want and let the media feed the public slanted tid-bits to keep them conservative and out there making The Man heaps of money.
